New Tuition Aid Deadline
New Tuition Aid Deadline is February 15
Plan ahead! OLP is implementing a new tuition aid process. The goal of this earlier timeline and process is to allow the OLP Financial Aid Committee to respond to aid requests prior to parents re-enrolling students for the 2014-2015 school year.
The deadline to apply for tuition aid is moving up to February 15. We suggest that applicants for aid for 2014-2015 make their tax appointments for early February. Doing so will enable them to meet the 2-15 deadline as well as the second deadline of 2-28. This second deadline is for mailing completed 2013 tax returns to OLP's aid processor.
Please note, we are no longer using PSAS. All applications will now be done online through FAST. The FAST web portal will be up on OLP's website in January. For questions regarding online applications, please call FAST's 24-hour customer service line directly. After you finish your online form, mail your completed 2013 tax forms to FAST. This mailing must be done by the end of February to allow FAST to verify your on-line request. Once your application is verified by FAST the OLP Financial Aid Committee will consider it.
OLP wants to stress that using the FAST on-line application is mandatory for all tuition aid applicants.
Failure to apply through FAST will mean no aid. The FAST online form is mandatory for everyone.

Blankets With A Blessing By Bethany Turner '95, Service Learning Department
 |
On September 24and 26, Senior Danielle Burner organized a service project here on-campus open to every student creating blankets for terminally ill patients at Sharp Memorial Hospital. These blankets will be given to the patients as a source of comfort in their final hours and often become a tangible legacy passed down in families to remember their loved ones.
Danielle has done an excellent job of reaching out to collaborate on this project with such groups as "Parents in Prayer," "The Kindness Project" and outside service partners as well.On Oct. 1 the blankets will be blessed at the all school Mass.
Any blankets completed after Oct. 1 will be blessed by our campus ministers at the Oct. 4 prayer service in the Chapel.
Some students working on the blankets recalled a similar project last year lead by Danielle making knitted caps for the Hematology Oncology Unit at Rady Children's Hospital. With over 700 hours of service including cancer research at UCSD, Danielle is inspiring a living legacy with her OLP family. In her Senior Year, she will be helping found our newly forming Service Mentors and creating service opportunities of this kind on campus.

News From the Head of School
By Lauren Lek, Head of School
Dear Students, Parents and Friends:
Autumn has officially arrived, and with it a fall wind that helps to welcome in the rich traditions of the season; events that inherently draw us together with family, friends and loved ones. Already at OLP, we have had so many beautiful opportunities to come together as a community of faith through our liturgical celebrations, as partners in the education of our students at our back to school nights, and in welcoming aunts, uncles, parents and most especially grandparents to our annual Grandparent Days.
Your partnership in joining together in supporting our students can also be seen through your commitment in financially investing in the enriching learning opportunities of our students. On behalf of faculty, staff and students, I thank you for all you have done through our 2013 student fundraiser, to support the academic, social, and spiritual learning needs of our students.
Although the magazine drive is our only school-wide fundraiser, the need for support still continues. As we prepare for the opportunity to enhance the facilities at OLP, we also strive to find new and innovative courses to offer students.
This fall we will begin our partnership with architectural firm, Lake|Flato, to support OLP in developing a comprehensive school-wide Master Site Plan. This work will continue throughout the second semester, involving opportunities for engagement by all key stakeholders.
In addition to planning for the physical changes around the campus, we are also in the process of changing several of our print and collateral pieces. This month, OLP will launch its first annual full-color magazine, to highlight the excellence that permeates our rich educational traditions, and vision for the future. I am so proud to help share the stories that illustrate how The Academy of Our Lady of Peace remains a pillar of distinction within San Diego.
Again, thank you for your support, and your partnership!
God Bless,
Lauren Lek

OLP Students Chosen to Attend
TEDx Youth@SanDiego
 | Denise Drachenberg, Sami Fustino, Leila Firestone, Pitrina Gilger and Naomi Smullen were chosen to attend TEDx Youth@SanDiego. (Not pictured Raechel Hill '15 & Morgan Hazel '14.) |
On Sunday, Nov. 24 TEDx Youth@SanDiego will welcome and host 400 high school students from all over San Diego County (and across the globe via a world-wide live-stream) for a day of ideas, interaction, and inspiration.
It is the only TEDx Youth event offered to high school students nationally, and this year, OLP was invited to select seven students to attend.
OLP students who wished to attend the TEDx Youth@San Diego Conferencel underwent an anonymous application process that was reviewed by a selection team composed of a cross-section of OLP staff in order to determine the seven young ladies who will be able to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Mrs. Angela Gascho coordinated these efforts on behalf of OLP and the seven OLP students selected to attend the conference are: Denise Drachenberg, Sami Fustino, Leila Firestone, Morgan Hazel, Raechel Hill, Pitrina Gilger and Naomi Smullen.
An incredible array of big thinkers, dreamers, and doers will take the stage in the spirit of "Ideas Worth Spreading" as the youth of San Diego share in a collective experience that will engage, inspire, and challenge them to realize their full potential and bring the 2013 theme "UNLIMITED" to life.
TED events have an international reputation of generating high-level inspirational, collaborative, and motivating dialogue on a wide array of topics ranging from science and technology, to arts and music, to health and well-being. Being presented the opportunity to partake in such a highly selective and reputable conference is truly invaluable for our OLP students. Students will hear and interact with amazing and innovative speakers, participate in a variety of hands-on experiences, and connect with similarly motivated youth from across the county.

Athletics Update
Enthusiasm Runs High on Cross Country Team
By Coach Keays, Athletics Department
 | Captains Marisa Alexander (left), Silvana Johnson, and Julia Sinsay have a combined 10 years experience in cross country |
With more than 50 girls on OLP's 2013 Cross Country team, the level of enthusiasm is very high, even with many of the runners experiencing the sport for the first time. Practice started in mid-August, and already most of the team is running 4-5 miles per day. The old saying in Cross Country is that athletes complain a lot, because there is a lot to complain about, but that doesn't ring true with this team. One of the beauties of the sport is the mutual support and encouragement that athletes bring, and this year's team has captured that spirit.
Individuals at the forefront of the competitive side include freshman Lacey Yahnke, who has been very impressive in both practice and meets. Sophomore Lilianne Gonzalez has upped her game this year, already achieving her personal bests in pre-season competitions. Junior Hannah Keohane has provided a great deal of stability to both the training and racing, setting a great example to the younger runners. Team captains Marisa Alexander, Silvana Johnson and Julia Sinsay, all seniors, have provided a sense of camaraderie and enthusiasm throughout the team.

JV Volleyball Off to A Great Start
By Coach Lewis, Athletics Department
It has already been a great start to our season. Junior Varsity Volleyball finished preseason games 2-1. We beat San Diguieto in three games (22-25, 25-18, 15-8), Pacific Ridge in two (25-22, 25-19) and had one heartbreaking loss to Francis Parker that was definitely a nail biter (25-16, 26-28, 14-16)! Conference games started on Tuesday with Mission Bay. The Pilot squad easily handled them in two games (25-8, 25-10).
Leading the team in kills are sophomores Aubrey Labonte-Clark, Makaela Nagy and freshman Kelli Johnson. We are looking forward to the month of October, not only continuing our conference games but also the Rancho Bernardo Round-up tournament on October 5th that is stacked with great competition for us. GO PILOTS! Learn more about our Athletics Program here.

Student Attends California Girls State 2013
 | Faye and her fellow senate legal aids.
|
Last spring, I had the honor of being selected by my school administration, and the American Legion Auxiliary, to attend the California Girls State 2013 prestigious program that is open for application to OLP students in their junior year. For six nights and seven days in June, I lived, ate, and worked alongside four-hundred ninety-nine amazing young women.
Right from the beginning of our arrival at Claremont McKenna College, we were thrust into a seemingly alternate world--a 51st State we affectionately dubbed the "Alternative California." It was our role, as representatives from all over the state, to construct a government to lead this new one.
When I reflect over it, I think of how Girls State allowed me to grow as a leader and more. On the first day, I was one of the first to run for office. I became the mayor of the City of Harte then. On the second day, I became a legal analyst for the Senate. On the fourth day, I received a rare distinction in being appointed to not one, but two of the positions on the governor's board, giving me full reins overseeing the health policies and health practices in our state. As mayor I led thirty girls through their activities throughout the week, as analyst I led senators through gaining support for their bills, and as one of the governor's advisors I shaped Alternative California's health policies.
What struck me the most, though, was being chosen to speak on behalf of peace at the closing ceremony. For all its elusiveness and almost unattainable state, peace is the goal of our governments and laws. It's what we strive for to create a higher society, and in the end, it has to be echoed in how we act. As our governor said in the final speech on the last day, "Right here, right now, is the happiest I've ever been." For seven days and six nights five hundred girls were given charge to form and reform their government. By the end of it, they found peace. And in peace, we achieved happiness. |
OLP Gets Visit from Old Globe Theater Actor
On Sept. 23, one of OLP's World Literature Honors classes was blessed with a fun-filled and informative visit from the Old Globe Theater's Christopher Salazar. Chris is a talented young actor in the Old Globe Theater's 25th graduate acting class, a well-seasoned hand model, and a puppeteer from Miami, Florida. He has appeared in lead roles in Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Oedipus, Peter Pan, and more.
He gifted us with an interactive lecture all about the ins-and-outs of the theater. Throughout the block, he shared his stories of his accidental hand-modeling career, his job as an actor in innumerable plays in and his role as a student at the University of San Diego and the Old Globe Theater. One of his main goals during the presentation was to provide us with background and insight into Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to set the stage for our class field trip to watch the masterpiece be performed by Chris and his peers at the Old Globe Theater on Friday, September 27.
Chris examined several lines from the play itself and taught students about the complicated relationships formed by stubborn characters in literature. Chris encouraged students to join him on OLP's stage and play highly entertaining improvisational games and skits demonstrating conflicts in characters' complex relationships. We were thrilled to experience such a wonderful presentation and we look forward to his next visit and his upcoming plays! |
CSJ History Corner
By Margot Howard, Director of Institutional Advancement
As our school community gathered to honor the grandparents of OLP students this week, we could see and feel the delicate, yet strong threads of continuity binding us to one another across generations.
It is an honor to look into the eyes of a young OLP student and then immediately into the eyes of her grandparent. It is a precious moment in time that grounds us, roots us and blesses us.
When the very first Sisters of St. Joseph gathered in a tumultuous, war torn France in the 1600's they dedicated themselves in service to their struggling neighbors. Caring for those in their midst they founded hospitals, schools and orphanages. To support themselves in these times of poverty, the Sisters made ribbon and lace. In turn they taught the orphans to make ribbon and lace so that they could become self-sufficient.
The Sisters of St. Joseph have always held the dear neighbor in heart, as grandparents and those called to fulfill that role, hold their beloveds in heart. As the Sisters of St. Joseph have shared their knowledge and wisdom in a practical way for centuries, so do our grandparents today.
This abiding tradition of care for each OLP student is shared by our faculty, staff and families. It is the spiritual ribbon that ties our community together.

Letter From Executive Council
Kelsie Smith '14, Vice President, Executive Council
 | 2013-2013 Executive Council |
Modesty is hard to find in a world where people believe that attention is the root of happiness. Happiness should instead, spring from service, love, and gratitude. With these characteristics in mind, it was our duty as an Executive Council to find a few young ladies who exhibit bountiful works of service to their wider community with humility and grace, while keeping the Sisters of Saint Joseph's spirit alive in their hearts. The following four daughters of God have been called to a vocation of service and they live out this calling in a way that highlights their own strengths and joys. Hannah and Haley Teves, sisters in the current sophomore class (graduating year of 2016) have shown a bountiful amount of service in their passion for the treatment of animals, particularly horses. In completing over 35 hours at the organization called Horses of Tirnanog, these two young leaders continue to delve into their service and passion for horses. Susana Alvarado, from the junior class, promotes a strong Catholic identity and is an advocate for service to the less fortunate-completing boundless service in her parish community and also in Mexico, building houses for the orphaned. The final student that we believed deserves recognition is a young woman who has definitely been called to a life of service, Danielle Burner. She takes her love of science and children, as she volunteers at multiple hospitals for the past few years. What with completing over 700 hours at the hospitals, we can't wait what to see what these exemplary young ladies will accomplish and just how many people they will touch by her service. We thank you, ladies, for all your hard work during your years here at OLP. We commemorate you for your service, and believe all of you have answered some sort of call to help this world that needs for fixing hands. We were only able to recognize a few students, but please know that all service to the OLP and wider community does not go unnoticed.

Alumna Profile
Introducing Kacey Weiner '11
Currently, in my third year at Marquette, a Catholic Jesuit University in Madison, Wisconsin, I reflect often on my valuable time at OLP. It was there I learned to never be afraid of speaking up. As women, we have the power to change the world. We have the obligation to let our voices be heard, to make a positive difference not only for ourselves, but for everyone else. As a freshman at Marquette, I joined forces with other students to adopt Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School in Milwaukee to help bolster a struggling after school arts program, shore up student academic needs and provide administrative help. As servant leaders, we trained our fellow university students to provide outstanding tutoring especially in the areas of math, reading and science. Currently our program, called After School Arts & Tutoring has placed over 150 tutors at King Elementary School. And the good news for Milwaukee's children and families is that we plan to expand our organization to even more elementary schools in the region. Personally, my areas of concentration at Marquette include Political Science, Spanish and Public Relations. My interests have led me to the "study abroad" program in Santiago, Chile. It is the lessons I learned at OLP that informed me then and still do, as I broaden my worldview even more, traveling to new places. My name is Kacey Weiner, and I am a very proud graduate of OLP, class of 2011! Are you interested in being our next Alumna Profile? Email epippin@aolp.org for more info. We'd love to hear from you!
