Continued dryness helping some, hurting hay

By Amber Weaver

Abnormal dryness spread across the United States this week. While this was beneficial for many in the growing season, the latest U.S. drought monitor has a lot more color on it now. Farmers in the Great Basin, Northern Rockies, and Southeast saw relief, with all levels of extreme drought now out of those regions. However, our drought-stricken friends in the Plains region saw up to ten inches of rain in some areas, causing a two-category improvement in drought conditions in southeast Nebraska, but obviously, more precipitation is still needed to help with the long-term drought.

Year-over-year May hay stocks drop 13%

By Mike Rankin

Inventory in U.S. haymows on May 1 shrunk by 13% from a year ago. Compared to May 1, 2020, spring hay stocks are down 29% or 5.9 million tons. Based on USDA’s Crop Production report released last week, May 1 hay stocks dropped by 2.2 million tons from a year ago. This follows a 7% decline in May stocks from 2021 to 2022 and a 12% drop from 2020 to 2021. Hay stocks currently stand at just over 14.5 million tons. This past December, year-over-year hay stocks declined by 7.1 million tons. The recent May 1 hay stocks estimate is the lowest we’ve seen since 2013 when the nation’s hay inventory totaled 14.15 million tons.

All Hay Is Not Equal: Choose Your Livestock's Carefully

By Hobby Farms

During the cold winter months when pastures contain scant forage, hay is the typical diet for cattle, horses, sheep and goats. Next to pasture, good quality hay is the ideal feed. However, there are significant differences in the variety, quality and availability of hay, which can make feeding your livestock a time-consuming chore. But with some planning, feeding hay during the winter months can be a simple and efficient alternative while waiting the return of spring’s lush pastures. Hay falls into several categories: grass, legume, mixed (grass and legume) and cereal grain straw (such as oat hay).

Cow's Delight

3x4 Large Square Feeder Alfalfa

Feeder hay is a great feed for cows or to be incorporated into dry cow or heifer rations. Most batches have good leaf retention and color although some may have sun bleaching or minimal rain damage. Feeder hay can help reduce feed costs for cattle owners as it is often less expensive than other forage sources. Feeder hay can provide increased nutrient intake for cattle, as it is typically higher in protein and energy than pasture or other forage sources. We will have a heavy supply of this cost effective feed coming into the 2023 hay season.
