Our June 4 th - 8 th session of The Essentials, offered by our Summit Victim Assistance Academy, is fast approaching. The Essentials is one of only two nationally approved comprehensive prerequisite trainings offered in the state of Ohio. Attend this 44-hour training and master the National Organization of Victim Assistance (NOVA) model of crisis intervention to help individuals affected by a victimization or traumatic event. In addition, increase your knowledge about the judicial system, victims’ rights, and community resources. The Essentials designed for new and seasoned victim advocates, and professionals who serve individuals affected by crime and trauma, is a dynamic mix of classroom and online learning. k to Additional Resources
Community Corner
In recognition of her faithfulness, dedication, and commitment to victims of crime, Victim Assistance Program recently awarded Pamela Hinton the 2018 Rev. Dr. Robert Denton Outstanding Victim Service Award. A retired Assistant Principal from Barberton, and a victim of school violence, Pam is a passionate advocate for victims’ rights. She founded F.I.V.E.S. (Facing Incidents of Violence against Educators & Staff) a coalition of educators and school staff who strive to increase awareness, create solutions, and make a positive difference in addressing student aggression towards educators. Her efforts led to Senate Bill 133, legislation now requiring the Department of Education to report incidents of student violence that result in disciplinary action, including information about the individuals whom the violence was committed against.

According to The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study:

  • 43% of students reported they are teased, made fun of, or called names
  • 46% of students reported being the subject of lies or rumors
  • 32% of students reported being pushed, shoved, slapped, hit, or kicked by their peers
  • 34% of students reported they are excluded from play on purpose
  • 88% of middle school students, 78% of high school students, and 54% of elementary school students reported at least one incident of violence during the 2013-2014 school year.
