Dear NMSU Community,

The past year has been one of exciting growth, meaningful accomplishments, and heartfelt reflection in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. We've welcomed new faculty, celebrated major student achievements, and seen our community’s impact recognized at the highest levels of the university. These milestones speak to the strength, innovation, and dedication that define CHME.

A big “thank you” for all of the donations that allows CHME to purchase the OSHA approved cowboy hat safety helmets for all of our graduating students (see picture above for Spring 2025 graduates.)

We were proud to welcome two new assistant professors, Dr. Alejandro Gallagos and Dr. Houqian Li, whose expertise and energy are already enriching our department. Our students, too, continue to raise the bar, launching new initiatives like the American Nuclear Society student chapter and placing nationally in competitions that highlight the wide-reaching relevance of chemical engineering. Faculty leadership and mentorship continue to shine, as reflected in Professor Jessica Houston’s Westhafer Award, our university's highest honor for research.

Joseph Holles, Ph.D.

CHME Department Head

While we celebrate these many achievements, we also pause to remember and honor the lives of former department heads and professors Ron Bhada, John Patton, and Charley Johnson, who each left a lasting legacy on our program and in the lives of our alumni. Their contributions and the memories shared by former students remind us of the deep connections that make this department truly special.
