From the Steam of the Press to the Rhythm of Dance: Mrs. Bang's Second Act | A true story about the impact of Older Americans Act services, submitted by Hanul Family Alliance
For Kum Young Bang (79), the story of her life in America was written in sweat and steam. Like many first-generation Korean immigrants, she arrived in Chicago in 1991 and immediately entered the grueling world of the dry-cleaning business. For decades, her world was confined to the four walls of the shop. She worked from before sunrise until long after sunset, standing on her feet all day amidst the hiss of steam presses and the sharp scent of cleaning chemicals. There were no holidays, no hobbies, and no time to make friends. Her life was a relentless cycle of labor to survive and support her family.

Advocacy Spotlight: Elevating the Voices of Older Adults
Advocacy plays a critical role in ensuring older adults and caregivers have access to the services and supports they need to remain independent and connected in their communities. In February, aging network partners from across Illinois gathered in Springfield to highlight the importance of aging services and connect with legislators.
This spring, those conversations will continue locally through our Advocacy Breakfast Collaboratives, which bring together community leaders, providers, and residents to discuss issues affecting older adults in our region.

Navigating the 2026 Tax Season
Older adults and the professionals who support them can benefit from understanding new tax updates, available credits, common scams, and free assistance options. New tax provisions rolling out in 2026 bring changes that could offer real support to older adults, including expanded deductions and other adjustments that might increase savings.
With fraud prevention efforts expanding and free tax support widely available, older adults have many options to help guide them through the season with confidence.

Women's History Month 2026: Leading the Change for a Sustainable Future
Each March, Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to recognize the impact women have had on our communities, institutions, and social progress. The 2026 theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” highlights the ways women are creating systems and solutions that support long-term wellbeing for people and communities.
Sustainability in this context goes beyond environmental efforts. It includes economic stability, strong social networks, accessible healthcare, and communities designed to support people across the lifespan.
