The Aging Report
Celebrating Black Voices
There is so much to celebrate this month as we recognize the significant contributions and impact of black people to our society: Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, not to mention our Illinois notables including the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Muddy Waters, and President Barack Obama, to name a few. This year we add Kamala Harris to the historic canon as not only the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history, but the first black Vice-President. While this list merely skims the surface of the many black contributors to our collective history, we also salute the everyday heroes among us; the black older adults who influence our communities every day through their work, volunteerism, and dedication.
This month, we challenge you to take a deep dive into Black History Month and learn something new. Read a book, attend a virtual event, have a conversation that will educate you and challenge your thinking in a new way.

AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois is hosting three virtual Advocacy Collaboratives across our eight-county region! We invite elected officials, aging network providers, local partners and concerned citizens for a virtual community discussion about current issues facing Illinois older adults, caregivers, and families.

Let's advocate together while apart! Choose your session:

  • DuPage & Kane Counties: Friday, March 5, 2021 from 10 - 11:30 AM
  • Lake & McHenry Counties: Monday, March 8, 2021 from 10 - 11:30 AM
  • Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall & Will Counties: Friday, March 12, 2021 from 10 - 11:30 AM

These events are sponsored by AARP
COVID-19 Vaccine Information
Information on the availability of the COVID-19 vaccine is changing every day. AgeGuide will be updating its COVID-19 Resources page with the latest information for older adults about the vaccine as we receive it.

The Federal Pharmacy Program in Illinois will be working with Walgreens exclusively to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine. We encourage all older adults to continue to check the Walgreens website for available COVID-19 vaccine appointments.
It is important to continue to follow public health safety measures during this time. Following the 3 W's; wearing a mask, washing our hands and watching our distance, will help keep older adults safe until they are able to receive the vaccine.

Additionally, if you did not get a chance to watch IDoA's Panel Discussion on COVID-19 challenges facing older adults in ethnic and minority communities last week, you can view it any time here.
Make a Positive Change
in the New Year
Are you interested in making positive change in the lives of older adults in your community? Would you like to influence services provided for older adults?

AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois is looking for candidates who are interested in joining our Board of Directors or Advisory Council!
Candidates should have a desire to be strong advocates for improved or expanded services and the ability to identify service gaps for older adults in the county that he or she lives and/or works. An interest in current issues facing the aging network and older adults would be helpful to serving in this role. Candidates should have a willingness to share information on older adults services available and provide feedback to AgeGuide on service delivery questions or concerns. Board and Council members have the opportunity to be the unbiased voice for program development and can positively impact the lives of older adults and caregivers in our 8-county region.

People with the ability to attend meetings including an annual meeting and AgeGuide events (when held in person) are encouraged to fill out an application and email it to [email protected]
