Recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

On June 15th, we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), which is a day that focuses global attention on the problem of physical, financial and emotional abuse of older adults. WEAAD aims to provide an opportunity for communities to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect and raise awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. This observance serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations and communities to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.

To report suspected abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of an adult age 60 or older or a person with disabilities age 18-59 call the statewide, 24-hour Adult Protective Services Hotline: 1-866-800-1409, 1-888-206-1327 (TTY).

In recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Month and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, AgeGuide will be hosting a FREE training on secondary trauma and the importance of self-care on Tuesday, June 28 at 9 AM. The session will discuss the every day stressors and the new pressures of working through a pandemic. Participants will learn healing strategies like self-assessment, mindfulness and meditation. This session is open to the public, but designed for social services, first responders and/or medical professionals. Robin Pendleton of Pendleton Training and Consulting provides training on communication, professional development and supervisory skills. He has over a decade of experience providing trauma-informed, person-centered care.

Advocacy Corner: Celebrating Pride Month

As we celebrate Pride month in June, this is the perfect time to take stock of legislative wins and begin to strategize on future policy priorities to advance equity and inclusion in Illinois. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer (LGBTQ+) people and people living with HIV face unique challenges as they age. A lack of equitable and supportive resources and services along with prejudice and stigma keep many LGBTQ+ older adults from accessing the healthcare and services they need. The 102nd General Assembly took steps to remedy these challenges, passing several landmark bills that add protections for LGBTQ+ older adults and older adults living with HIV.
