As of December 1st, the Agency on Aging has changed our name to
AgeGuide.
Why is a 45-year-old, established organization changing its name? We know there is confusion about our name, but not confusion about what we do, which is
help guide older adults to the services they need to live independently as they age.
Our new name,
AgeGuide, will better convey exactly what we do, and will allow us to:
- Amplify the impact our funded partners make in the lives of older adults and their families
- Advocate for system and policy changes that support older adults to remain independent and connected so they can age well
- Better communicate who we are so we can guide folks through the aging process
- Drive more access to life-changing resources such as meals, transportation, caregiver support and so much more for those residing in the collar counties of Chicago in Northeastern Illinois
But what’s not changing is our mission to optimize the quality of life for nearly 700,000 older adults and their caregivers, whether they live in DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry or Will county.
We’ve spent decades building a coordinated local network of providers, from point of service organizations to libraries to senior centers who help older adults to maintain their well being in the 8 counties we serve, and we look forward to many more decades of service here in Northeastern Illinois.

AgeGuide Joins National Campaign to Raise Awareness of Local Home Modification Programs
|
Many older adults living in Northeastern Illinois will likely experience changes to their mobility as they age. As a result of these changes, many older adults and their caregivers will turn to local organizations for support with updating their homes to meet their evolving mobility needs, which can be a daunting process.
Home modifications help make homes better suited to meet the changing needs of the people who live in them—and can help prevent falls, maximize independence and support caregiving.

|
Because older adults and their family caregivers may not know where to start on the home modification process, AgeGuide is participating in the Home for the Holidays campaign, an annual public education campaign led by the Eldercare Locator, to ensure older adults have the resources they need as they update their homes—and continue living in the community.
AgeGuide can connect older adults and their caregivers to services and programs that can support them as they modify their homes for successful aging. We offer financial assistance with home modifications and home repairs through four programs:
- Residential Repair and Renovation: assistance with making homes safer and more accessible
- Supplemental Services Funds: assistance with home maintenance or adaptive equipment
- Caregiver Supplemental Funds: helps pay for short term services, adaptive devices and equipment
- Dementia Supplemental Funds: helps pay for modifications or services that improve the quality of life for anyone with Alzheimer's or related dementia (This is a temporary program that ends June 30, 2020.)
In many cases, because these funds are limited, community organizations will work together to cover the costs of a home improvement, repair or modification. A few examples of how these programs have helped older adults and those caring for them continue living independently include: installing grab bars near the toilet, in the shower and/or bathtub; adding a bath bench to a shower or bathtub; adding lighting to dim hallways; replacing door handles; securing railings to both sides of a staircase; installing ramps so individuals with mobility limitations can get in and out of their home safely; and adding high-contrast non-skid tape to stairs.
