The Aging Report
Leaves Fall, People Should Not
Falls Prevention Awareness Week is coming! September 20-24, 2021. Falls are not a normal part of aging and should not be accepted as such. For 14 years now, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) has spearheaded National Falls Prevention Awareness Day to correspond with the first day of fall. It has now turned into a week with falls coalitions nationwide offering screenings, education and activities all meant to call attention to this expensive, pervasive, and often avoidable health dilemma.

Celebrating Healthy Aging Month
September is Healthy Aging Month, which focuses on the positive aspects of the aging journey. AgeGuide encourages older adults to take charge of their well-being both physically (by aging with a healthy body) and mentally (by maintaining a healthy mind). In our 8-county region, there are many ways that older adults can maintain health, happiness, and fulfilling lives. Overall, this month is dedicated to achieving a more positive outlook on the process of growing older.

AgeGuide Walks to End Alzheimer's
Tuesday, September 21st is World Alzheimer’s Day, a day in which organizations and people around the globe concentrate their efforts to focus on raising awareness for Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. Dementia is a general term for loss of memory and cognitive abilities, with Alzheimer’s Disease being the most common form of dementia. In 2020, as many as 5.8 million Americans were living with Alzheimer’s.
To honor this day, AgeGuide will be participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Pottawatomie Park, 8 North Ave, St Charles, IL. 60174. Held annually by the Alzheimer’s Association, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness as well as funds for care, support, and research of this disease. We encourage everyone to walk with AgeGuide or to even just walk in your neighborhood in observance of this day.

AgeGuide Advocacy Corner
This past legislative session saw the passage of impactful legislation around Alzheimer’s disease (SB 677), long-term care residents’ rights regarding communication with family and doctors (HB3147), and driver training for older adults (HB 2570). We know that the best advocacy campaigns combine building relationships with legislators and the transformative power of storytelling.
That’s why AgeGuide is starting a Podcast!

If you or someone you know is a good conversationalist, lived in long-term care during the pandemic, and would be willing to talk with us, please contact [email protected]. Everyone who submits an interviewee suggestion will be entered into a raffle to win a pair of wireless earbuds!
