The Alleluias are on the Way!
Pastor’s Ponderings!
Holy Week is fast approaching and the church staff is working hard to get all the parts in place for the three services and other events that are part of this time of remembering and celebration. The Lenten soup suppers and Lenten Evening services have been well received by those who attended; a big thank you to all the groups that hosted the meals, the soups were great and of course, we could not have done it without the efforts of Carole Rebholz and the Fellowship Ministry Team. A special thanks for those who were willing to share their Faith Stories: they were moving and thought provoking. Thank you to Gene Fougner and Cathy Namock for accompanying the Holden Evening Prayer Service and those who lead with wonderful singing. We have one more Wednesday before we journey into the valley of Holy Week. Please consider attending all of the services: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (7pm), Good Friday (7pm) and Easter Sunday! There will be an Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch following the 10:15am worship on Easter.
We had a chance to act as church together this past Saturday at the High Country Conference Assembly Gathering at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Flagstaff. Janet Santiago, Gail Kenny and I attended representing Emmanuel. Bishop Deborah Hutterer guided the meeting as we shared a worship service, then talked about the vision and goals of the Grand Canyon Synod for the coming few years. It was great to see pastors and lay leaders from the 9 churches in our Northern Arizona area, as well as retired pastors including Pr. Kirk and his wife Sheri. If you would like to learn more about what is going on in our synod, consider signing up for the weekly newsletter by going to the synod website, , and scrolling to the bottom of the page to find the button to click to sign up.
We have experienced a few deaths in our church family these past months, and the celebration of Easter will be particularly meaningful for many of us. When we again proclaim, “He is risen, He is risen, indeed!” we know that our loved ones are in the hands of our blessed Redeemer and that He makes all things new! Amen.

Easter Blessings!
Pastor Tricia
And the one who was seated on the throne said,
“See, I am making all things new.”
Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

April Outreach: Only A Child
Only A Child is a small yet powerful mission of hope and opportunity for young men in Guatemala City. Its mission attends to those youth that have been abandoned by their families or have run away from abusive homes. A typical boy taken in by this mission will be 16-20 years of age, with less than a fourth-grade education. He might have been living on the streets, a drug user and even a gang member. He realizes that his life is a dead-end street and wants something better for himself.

At Only A Child, he is given a safe place to stay, three meals a day, and a chance to get an education. Once a boy is accepted, he must give up his previous life of drugs and gangs and demonstrate a sincere desire to change his life. In return the youth are given a sense of family along with all the responsibilities of being a family member. They also work at a carpentry shop and gain a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work. They have the opportunity to advance their education, including university level. Those living in the shelter are provided structure, protection and guidance to fulfill their dreams of education and to provide tools for living productive lives. The following picture shows the current boys in the shelter.

George Ledger, the founder of Only A Child, left his comfortable life in Boston, MA in 1994 to minister to these homeless youth in a local park. He felt compelled to pursue a less certain path amid the crime and poverty of Guatemala City. In 2000, he opened a shelter and has reached out to many of the abandoned youth of Guatemala City. He has made a huge difference in the disadvantaged youth of Guatemala by caring, helping, directing and embracing them.

During April, you can make a contribution to Only A Child through the monthly outreach and click here to see more information!

Lenten Services
Wednesday, April 10 will be our last Lenten Evening Service of Holden Evening Prayer at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary followed by our Lenten Soup Supper at 6:45pm in the Fellowship Hall.

The weekly meals are hosted by various groups and Bible Studies of our congregation, but if you haven’t been contacted by a group yet and would like to donate a pot of soup, contact Carole Rebholtz.
Easter Sunday
Join us on Easter Sunday to celebrate Christ's resurrection!

There will be no Sunday school that day so families have the opportunity to celebrate together, but make sure to head outside right after the 10:15 service for an Easter Egg Hunt!

A brunch will also follow the 10:15 service. Join us for a time of extra special fellowship!
Interfaith Meal
Join us for chicken casserole with a green salad and wonderful fellowship on Friday, April 12 at 11:30am.
Undie Sunday!
Sunday, April 14 is Palm Sunday and what a great day to reach out to those in need in our community!

Faith Lutheran Church on Camelback in Phoenix is just a few blocks from the Guatemalan Consulate. This congregation has been working with the consulate to help refugees who are awaiting asylum hearings by providing hot meals and overnight housing on Thursdays for anywhere from 40-80 people. These people arrive with just the clothes they are wearing, so having clean underwear can be an amazing blessing.

The congregation at Faith Lutheran is small but mighty, and they would love to have some help. That’s where we come in. Bring in “new in the package” underwear for adult men and women, as well as youth and children and put it in the labeled Undie Box in the Narthex. Pr. Tricia will take it to Phoenix the next time she attends the monthly Women’s Clergy Lunch.

Sound System Replacement Update
Paul Berry presented two bids he received from 1) AVS Audio Visual Specialists located in Camp Verde and 2) Onyx Audio located in Prescott/Phoenix. There was some discussion on the bids, and it was decided to have Paul have AVS provide us with some additional information regarding a 6-month or 1-year warranty regarding computer updating and/or additions to the system should we vote to approve their bid.
Final vote on the sound system will occur at the next Emmanuel church council meeting scheduled for April 9, 2019.
New Church Council Member Appointment
Tawyna Worthington has been appointed as a new church council member. Tawyna is replacing Bob Moser who resigned his position in late February. Tawyna was the fourth highest vote recipient at the Annual Meeting in January. Emmanuel’s Constitution states “…the Congregation Council shall elect, by majority vote, a successor until the next annual meeting . ” A majority vote was taken at the church council meeting on March 12, 2019.
