Dear Alliance Community,

As we close out another powerful year together, The Alliance is thrilled to welcome adrienne maree brown to our final member meeting of the fiscal year on Thursday, June 20 at 11am AK. This is a rare and timely opportunity to gather in community with one of the most imaginative and transformative voices of our time—and we invite you and your coalitions to be part of it.

Register here to join us via Zoom

adrienne maree brown (she/they) is growing a garden of healing ideas. Informed by decades of movement facilitation, somatics, science fiction scholarship and doula work, adrienne has nurtured Emergent Strategy, Pleasure Activism, Radical Imagination and Loving Correction as ideas and practices for transformation. adrienne is the NYT-bestselling author/editor of several published texts, a ritual singer-songwriter, co-generator of the Lineages of Change Tarot Deck, and co-creator/host of How to Survive the End of the World podcast with Autumn Brown. adrienne's latest books Loving Corrections and Ancestors are now available from AK Press.

adrienne’s work deeply resonates with our shared commitment to reimagining systems, honoring lived experience, and practicing collective care. As we look ahead to a new cycle of collaboration and possibility, what better way to close the year than in dialogue with someone who so beautifully models transformation, healing, and radical imagination?

We encourage you to share this invitation with your own coalitions—this conversation is for all of us.

Bring Your Questions for adrienne

This is a chance to be in conversation—so we’d love to uplift your voice. If you have a question you’d like adrienne to speak to during the session, please email it to me at tbobrycki@recoveralaska.org in advance.

Here are a few examples to get you thinking:

  • Our coalition is addressing substance use, prevention, and wellness—the work is meaningful but not without its challenges. What is your advice for continuing to show up and sustain momentum in the face of shifting resources and growing community needs?
  • How does Emergent Strategy fit with other frameworks? How do we weave them together—or keep them distinct?
  • We’re in year 5 of creating Emergent Strategy, have seen progress, and hit some hurdles—what trends or advice do you have for coalitions at this stage?

Summer Challenge: Choose Connection

To keep our momentum going during the July break, Southcentral regional Co-Chair Aaron Osterback invites you to take on a simple, meaningful challenge: show us how you choose connection this summer.

Whether it’s a hike with friends, a meal shared with family, quality time with a pet, or a solo adventure that feeds your spirit—we want to see what healthy connection looks like in your world.

Send us a statement, story, photo, or experience that highlights how you’re creating or sustaining connection this summer. Submissions will be shared back with the network in August as a way to reconnect and inspire one another.

Reminder: We will not meet in July. Enjoy the break, and we’ll see you in community again this August.

In the meantime, check out adrienne’s podcast Emergent Strategy and email us if you’d like a copy of one of her books.

We hope to see you on June 20!

Sitka Counseling Leads Community Collaboration

Sitka Counseling staff recently attended and helped facilitate a community event focused on connection and collaboration. They presented on their Prevention work, the HOPE Coalition, the Choose Connection Campaign, and their role in the Alliance. Community partners—including Sitka Tribe of Alaska, SEARHC, SAFV, UAS, and others—shared their services and referral pathways, building stronger networks to support wellness across Sitka.

Stop and Talk 2025 with

Anchorage Adolescent Substance Use Prevention (AASMP)

This May, the Anchorage Adolescent Substance Misuse Prevention (AASMP) Coalition partnered with two Anchorage School District high schools to host a simple, supportive activity for students. As the school year wraps up—a time filled with both excitement and stress—the coalition set up a table offering hot chocolate, marshmallows, graham crackers, and lollipops.

The goal was to create a low-pressure space for students to pause, enjoy a treat, and share how they’re feeling or what they’re looking forward to this summer. With no expectations or commitments, the event encouraged light conversation and check-ins, reminding youth that they are seen, supported, and not alone.

The event saw approximately 60 meaningful interactions between students and school staff, making it a small but impactful moment of connection.

About The Alliance

The Alliance is a collaborative effort of multiple and diverse partners across Alaska who recognize the impacts of alcohol misuse on individuals and communities. We are personally and professionally committed to working together to address this complex problem in our state.

Our primary goal is to connect and engage communities as partners — increasing protective factors, reducing risk factors, and changing social norms — to prevent underage alcohol use and eliminate adult misuse in Alaska.

Get Involved

Between starting new work and sustaining our progress, there are many opportunities to participate in The Alliance! All current workgroups are open to any member who would like to join. You can always read more about our workgroups and their purpose on the Get Involved page of our website. Our network practices an emergent strategy, and we update information based on our network's needs.

  • The Communications/Social Norms Workgroup will be supporting the social norms campaign and The Alliance's various other internal and external communications needs. The Comms Workgroup meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 1-2 pm.
  • The Data and Learning Workgroup will be supporting data equity conversations and practices.
  • The Evaluation and Learning Workgroup is where members can participate in developing and overseeing the process of reflecting on the work of the network to identify what is working well and where more attention may be needed so we can continue to develop and grow.
  • The Strategy and Design Workgroup builds structures and processes for the network to work in alignment with our values and theory of change.

You are welcome to ask questions about those workgroups or to ask to join any of them.

If you would like to submit content for The Alliance newsletter, please email Tesia at tbobrycki@recoveralaska.org and Blaze Bell at bbell@recoveralaska.org.
