Dear Alliance Community,

We are thrilled to announce that adrienne maree brown will be joining us as the featured speaker at our final meeting of the fiscal year on Friday, June 20 from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM. This is an open invitation, all are welcome to attend what promises to be an inspiring and grounding conversation.

adrienne maree brown is a renowned writer, facilitator, and activist whose work explores the intersection of social justice, healing, and transformation. As the author of Emergent Strategy and Pleasure Activism, she offers powerful insights into how we can co-create a future rooted in care, imagination, and collective liberation, core values that resonate deeply with the mission of The Alliance.

Ending our year with Adrienne’s voice is no coincidence. Her work challenges us to slow down, reflect, and build movements that are not only effective but also life-giving. As we close out this fiscal year and prepare for what’s ahead, we couldn’t imagine a more fitting guide to help us reflect on our shared purpose and reignite our commitment to equity, healing, and systemic change.

We encourage you to check out her Emergent Strategy podcast to get a taste of her voice and vision before the event. And if you’d like a copy of her book, Emergent Strategy, just email us—we’d be happy to share one with you.

We hope to see you there. Let’s gather, listen, and close the year in community and strength.

In gratitude,

Tesia Bobrycki

Sitka Counseling & SEARHC Team up with Choose Connection

In honor of Take Down Tobacco Day, Sitka Counseling and SEARHC teamed up to deliver a Risks of Vaping presentation to over 130 6th and 7th grade students at Blatchley Middle School. The session highlighted how tobacco companies deliberately target youth with flavored products, trendy branding, and deceptive messaging—all to hook lifelong customers. Students learned about the serious health risks associated with vaping, including nicotine addiction, lung damage, and the increasing popularity of nicotine pouches like Zyn, which often go unnoticed but pose similar risks. Together, we’re creating a healthier, tobacco-free future for Sitka’s youth.

Policy Workgroup Updates & Training Requests

News updates: SB 15, which on one hand puts cancer warnings on alcohol and on the other allows underage individuals to serve alcohol has become law. The Governor did not sign the bill, indicating some level of disapproval. HB 57 which could material affect Counseling services in schools (it raises school funds) has passed both the House and the Senate and now goes to the Governor for his consideration. This became a priority of the Alliance as it has an impact on the ability of youth to remain resilient in the face of peer pressure to drink or use. Counselors are essential to helping kids with this.

Network Updates: The Workgroup continues to welcome new members and has added a number of House and Senate bills to track. The Workgroup has also begun to look at National issues and to assess how to be more engaged with those. Finally, the Workgroup successfully completed the CounterTools effort to assess availability of types of alcohol in retail stores and to begin to strategize on how to address availability, based on this data.

Training: Please help us identify your needs for training in the policy arena! Suggestions may be sent to Tesia at tbobrycki@recoveralaska.org or Tom at tsbegich@gmail.com

About The Alliance

The Alliance is a collaborative effort of multiple and diverse partners across Alaska who recognize the impacts of alcohol misuse on individuals and communities. We are personally and professionally committed to working together to address this complex problem in our state.

Our primary goal is to connect and engage communities as partners — increasing protective factors, reducing risk factors, and changing social norms — to prevent underage alcohol use and eliminate adult misuse in Alaska.

Get Involved

Between starting new work and sustaining our progress, there are many opportunities to participate in The Alliance! All current workgroups are open to any member who would like to join. You can always read more about our workgroups and their purpose on the Get Involved page of our website. Our network practices an emergent strategy, and we update information based on our network's needs.

  • The Communications/Social Norms Workgroup will be supporting the social norms campaign and The Alliance's various other internal and external communications needs. The Comms Workgroup meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 1-2 pm.
  • The Data and Learning Workgroup will be supporting data equity conversations and practices.
  • The Evaluation and Learning Workgroup is where members can participate in developing and overseeing the process of reflecting on the work of the network to identify what is working well and where more attention may be needed so we can continue to develop and grow.
  • The Strategy and Design Workgroup builds structures and processes for the network to work in alignment with our values and theory of change.

You are welcome to ask questions about those workgroups or to ask to join any of them.
