Amani Staff Spotlight

Meet Zach Pusti

Zachariah (Zach) Pusti is the Director of Legal and Victim Advocacy at Amani Family Services. Joining Amani just over 8 months ago, Zach oversee the Victim Care Program and the new Naturalization and Legal Assistance (NALA) Program.

A Fort Wayne Native, after finishing his bachelor's degree, Zach pursued a master's degree in international relations in Budapest. Following his passion for humanitarian work, Zach spent the last 15+ years overseeing refugee protection and durable solution programs at UNHCR operations in Africa and Latin America.

What inspired you to join the team here?

With over a decade of experience in refugee protection abroad, it was important for me to join a team that understands and shares compassion for immigrant journeys. At Amani, this commitment is reflected in our daily work, from victim assistance to immigration services, counseling, and case management.

What challenges have you faced in your role?

Within immigrant communities, we have observed increased hesitation to report domestic violence and other types of crime due to the uncertain social climate, potentially resulting in prolonged and unresolved service needs. Another challenge is always going to be funding for programs.

What does Mental Health Awareness mean to you?

It means appreciating and nurturing the openness among friends, families and communities to talk about mental health, and the patience needed to learn and grow together. While mental health remains a taboo subject in many parts of the world, I’m encouraged by the efforts within our communities to deepen our understanding and the language we use to discuss it.

What should community members know about Amani and what we do?

Community members should know that Amani offers comprehensive program services delivered by experienced staff who speak their language. Our program services range from victim support to immigration assistance, counseling, substance use support, and case management. If you’re unsure about seeking services, reach out to us anyway. We’re always happy to connect, discuss needs, and explore how we can help.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors, whether hiking or running. I’m looking forward to returning to Panama in a couple of months to see friends, go hiking and hopefully do some surfing.
