Luther’s Marks of the Church
The Word
This week begins a Seven-Week Series on Luther’s Marks of the Church. Martin Luther identified seven visible signs, or “marks,” that help us recognize where the church of Jesus Christ is present. These marks are not merely doctrines we believe. They are gifts through which Christ continues to meet us, shape us, and sustain us. We experience all seven marks in our weekly liturgy.
Over the next seven weeks, we will reflect on each of these marks and what they mean for our life together as the church. The marks are the Word, Baptism, Holy Communion, Forgiveness, Ministry, Prayer and Worship, and The Cross.
For Martin Luther, the Word of God was the first mark of the church. Wherever the Gospel of Jesus Christ is faithfully proclaimed, Christ’s church is present. Every Sunday, God speaks to us in and through the “Word of the Lord” as Scripture is read, proclaimed in a sermon, sung in the words of hymns, and prayed as generations of Christians have prayed before us.
This matters because Christianity is not primarily about our search for God. It begins with God speaking to us. Through Scripture, God tells us who God is and reminds us of who we are. We hear stories of creation and covenant, sin and forgiveness, exile and homecoming, death and resurrection. Sometimes the Word comforts us: “Do not fear.” Last Sunday, the Word of God came through Peter, who prayed, “God Saves Us!”
Sometimes God’s word challenges us to “Love your neighbor and your enemy.” Sometimes it calls us to repentance. And sometimes it offers us the one promise we desperately need to hear: You are not alone. God is with you.
The Word is not merely information about God. Through the Word, Christ encounters us. On some Sundays, a familiar passage suddenly speaks differently because our circumstances have changed. A Psalm we have heard dozens of times may suddenly become our prayer. A verse we barely noticed years ago may become the promise that carries us through grief, illness, uncertainty, or change.
That is the mystery and gift of God’s Word. We never fully hear it. Week after week, we return to Scripture because we need to hear again the story that is larger than our own, the story of a God whose love refuses to let us go. The church gathers around that Word and carries it into the world.
