It’s conference time! Last year was a triumphant return to in-person meetings with more than 800 CAAs and SAAs joining together in Florida. This year, I think we can get to 1,000 and make it the largest gathering of CAAs ever assembled.

Register early. Tell your colleagues. Tell your classmates. Tell everyone!

Speaking of conferences, AAAA representatives solidified existing relationships and made new connections at the ASA's ANESTHESIOLOGY 2022 Annual Meeting in New Orleans featuring 11,000 attendees last month.

We learned that preserving the safe anesthesia care of our nation’s Veterans remains one of ASA’s top priorities. They are collecting comments in support of maintaining physician-led anesthesia care in advance of an expected future public comment period at SafeVACare.org. All AAAA members are encouraged to submit a comment.

And finally, I want to encourage you one more time to donate to the AAAA legislative fund. There are still some matching funds available until the end of the year. I hope you’ll join me in the President’s Club (donation total of $500 throughout the year). You’ll get early access to the AAAA conference hotel block and recognition both digitally year-round, and at the annual conference.

The next round of legislative sessions will begin in most states next January and AAAA has been working with several state CAA academies and anesthesiologist societies to support legislation to license CAAs and address practice issues. Twelve states will file legislation to license CAAs and two states will file legislation to address supervision ratios and geographic practice restrictions.

Through the support of our Legislative Fund, several state academies have been able to hire contract lobbyists to support their efforts. Contract lobbyists are a valuable resource that help shape a strategic plan, secure sponsors for legislation, assist with education and outreach, and allow us to tap into relationships with key legislators and leaders.

DCAAA recently enjoyed a fall happy hour with CAAs and SAAs. They're also excited for upcoming events with the Capital Food Bank Holiday Food Drive and DCAAA Blood Drive at Children's National (on Dec. 2). Their academy leadership elections are currently under way as well.

Nevada

The NVAAA board and their lobby team had their first post-election meeting last week and are thrilled to announce that their hopeful bill sponsor has officially won her tight race. Their legislative strategy continues to develop and they plan to pick up steam meetings with key players now that election results and committee assignments are finalized.

Their bill sponsor plans to file their bill on December 1 in preparation for Nevada's legislative session set to begin on February 6, 2023. If you or anyone you know has an interest in, or ties to, Nevada, get in touch with the NVAAA via their social media or our website at nv-aaa.org to help with their efforts. NVAAA encourages everyone to not just watch from the sidelines and would appreciate any help.

Each year AAAA honors members who have rendered outstanding service to the academy by awarding them with the Emeritus membership. Emeritus members are elected by the board after nomination by the membership committee and AAAA members. Once approved, Emeritus members are entitled to all rights and privileges of Fellow members, but are not required to pay dues, fines, or assessments, and are elected to the academy for life.
