Employee Excellence Nominee: Veronica Gonzalez

"Veronica is creative with her approach to assessing the needs around her and planning for and provide culturally relevant activities and events for the students and her community. She is always thinking about new ideas of how to support the school, not just CIS. By supporting the school, she is also supporting and promoting CIS simultaneously. The last 15 years have not stopped Veronica from doing the very best she can every day and providing opportunities for her campus but also sharing her knowledge and supporting incoming people in the field. She is no stranger to being an Internship, AmeriCorps and Volunteer Supervisor EVERY semester. She is a Tier 1 Rockstar- She works with the counselor to schedule field trips to intentionally get students out of the area of Kyle so that students can be exposed to big world around them.." -Excerpt

Human Resource Department Updates

REMINDER: New Background Screening Process

CISCT has experienced changes in background screening and fingerprint processes this school year. One change starting this January, and every January thereafter, CISCT will conduct background screenings through JDP screening services for all staff, AmeriCorps Members and Interns working on campus, Central or other sites.

Who: All staff, AmeriCorps members and Interns are expected to complete this clearance. Staff who completed the JDP background check as part of their onboarding process in December or January will not need to complete the JDP screening again.

For individuals working on campus, the JDP screening differs from the screening and fingerprint process conducted by school districts. If you work on a campus you will continue to follow the campus guidelines provided to you and complete the JDP background check. If you have any questions about JDP, campus background screening or the fingerprint process, please contact Yreen Ortiz at [email protected] or Dr. Hunt at [email protected].

Fees: The JDP background screenings are paid by CISCT.

What to expect: The JDP screening takes minutes to complete and results are received by HR within 24 hours.

For further information: Attend the next In the Know scheduled on February 12.

When: On Thursday, January 25 you received an email from Communities In Schools <[email protected]> that will look like the one below. Please complete this check immediately, no later than February 16, 2024. The system will send you a reminder until your background check is complete. Please feel free to reach out to Yreen Ortiz ([email protected]) if you have any questions.

MIDYEAR REMINDERS

  • As you add students to caseload midyear, please remember to complete all of the fields in REQUIRED sections on the Contact Detail page for each student. We need this information in order to be able to import student records into CIS-NAV (TEA's database).
  • Complete Audit Tasks within a week of assignment - this will help save you time at closeout this summer!
  • Edit Service Plans to add targeted needs, don't create new Service Plans.
  • If you want to see a report of any slice of your data for auditing purposes, just ask! PDs have a good sense of what reports are available, and PMD can create anything you need additionally. You can also join an upcoming 201 session and learn how to create your own reports. 🙂

Last Thursday kicked off Black History Month, with the 2024 theme "African Americans and the Arts" spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements and more -- calling us to learn more about African American art and artists and why such contributions continue to be essential to celebrate and honor today

Although Black Americans have similar rates of mental illness compared to the population at large, they are less likely to receive guideline-consistent care, be included in research, and utilize mental health services. This lack of access to effective care is driven by a number of factors, including poverty, mass incarceration, provider bias, discrimination, lack of culturally-responsive and diverse providers, and stigma. Our Network remains committed to addressing these needs and improving mental health services for Black communities.

The work does not start and end with Black History Month, but we'd like to take this opportunity to share some resources available on our website (and beyond it) for further learning:
