Employee Excellence Nominee: Dacia McDuffie

"Dacia encompasses the CIS values by building and creating lasting relationships with staff, families, and partners. Her impact to support students' needs comes with humility and transparency. She is always advocating for her students and finding unique ways to support and grow her school community. Dacia has gone above and beyond by making sure every student on her campus received holiday assistance. She had to collaborate with two different donors, speak to multiple parents and spent countless hours delivering gifts to families after school. With the growing need to support student's behavior, Dacia was awarded a micro grant and trained all teachers and staff on 'Zones of Regulation.' Each teacher received a basket full of tools to use in their classroom." -excerpt

As you may already be aware, several school districts in Central Texas are adjusting their schedules on April 8 due to the anticipated influx of visitors for the solar eclipse event. After careful consideration of the decisions made by all six districts we serve, the Executive Team has reached a decision regarding Communities In Schools' operations on that day. Given the lack of consistency among ISD plans, CIS will remain open for business on April 8. Our staff members will be expected to work either at their regular work site or, if their school is closed, from an alternate location such as home or the Central office. Employees who wish to take the day off may utilize personal or vacation time accordingly.

While we understand the significance of this rare celestial event, it's important to ensure the continuity of our operations and services to the communities we serve. However, we encourage all employees, regardless of their work location on that day, to take a mid-day break and step outside to witness the solar eclipse—a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For everyone working at the Central office on April 8, some fun activities are being planned, including lunch, before the eclipse. Additionally, we will provide safety glasses for those interested in safely viewing the eclipse.

If you are interested in learning more about the upcoming eclipse, NASA has created a 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Fact Sheet: https://science.nasa.gov/resource/2024-total-solar-eclipse-fact-sheet/ as part of their Eclipse Resources page: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/resources/. April 8 is going to be a day to remember!
