CEO Sharon Vigil | Reflections

Q&A with Christina Boatman, Program Manager at Norman-Sims Elementary School

• What was your first position at Communities in Schools?

I was the SmartKids Coordinator for Martin Middle School & Santa Rita Courts.

• What is one thing that has changed in your time at CIS and one thing that has remained the same?

One thing that has changed in my time is the organizational structure, we have added new positions and renamed existing ones to better fit the description! One thing that has remained the same is the passion and excitement for making a difference in the community. I have never worked for an organization that has so many people who love what they do.

• What is your favorite memory from your time at CIS?

I started my time at CIS at the beginning of COVID-19, and one of my favorite memories is doing virtual summer camp activities with the students. It was a strange and difficult time, but the meaningful connections we formed over zoom were a testament to the work we do.

• When you aren’t working ,what is your favorite way to spend time?

I enjoy embroidering, volunteering at Austin Animal Center and watching reality television!

• I said Yes to CIS of Central Texas because?

I was a CIS student in Elementary School and my experience helped me through some difficult times as a child. I always knew I wanted to give back to other children, so when I came across the opportunity to work for CIS I knew I had to jump on it. Now I've come full circle!

• Fun Fact?

I got to meet Chuck Norris when I was 10 because I won a Tai Kwan Do competition.

• What is your favorite quote?

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” - Mother Teresa
