Employee Excellence Nominee Spotlight: Rebecca Staffon

“In shadowing Rebecca while training, and now working alongside her, I see how amazing she is at her job as a Care Coordinator. During a monthly meeting I witnessed Rebecca facilitate the meeting in English and Spanish, and stay client focused as we discussed some heart heavy topics the family is facing. She maintained compassion and professional and advocated for top needs from the team and for the family. In the last 3 months on the CC team. I have witnessed Rebecca go above and beyond all the time... she has checked in with me to make sure I am doing ok as I embark on all the new, she emails the team with reminders and insights of CIS things, and external insights connected to social work and mental health. Her heart is fully invested in all that we do for our families, and witnessing her in her role has been an inspiration.” *excerpt from nomination

Strong Start is a program of SAFE that offers free parent education classes and support services to help parents with their kids’ behaviors (tantrums, routines, anxiety) and the overall stress of parenting. As of now our parent educators conduct sessions over the phone or virtually based on the parent’s availability. In-person services are an option as well

Strong Start Program Highlights:

  • SAFE’s Strong Start Parenting Program offers FREE one-on-one parenting support to families in the Travis or Williamson County with children ages 0-11.
  • All of our services are hybrid at the moment.
  • Classes are 1 hour a week or every other week.
  • Parent Educators use evidence-based curriculum to guide their lessons for 10-16 weeks. Groups range from 6-7 weeks.
  • Classes are available in multiple languages.
  • Participants in Strong Start also have access to many other incentives, basic needs, and support services both inside and outside of SAFE. This can look like FREE counseling, FREE diapers & wipes, or maybe help with a utility bill-just depends on the family’s needs.
  • We currently DO have a small waitlist, but time does move rather quickly which means families can start getting support almost immediately.
  • Check out our website
  • To get more information - call the Outreach Specialist, Shirdelle Cummings, at 512-264-4100 or by contacting her via email: [email protected]

Menu of Interventions: Coming soon - a micro survey about the menu of interventions. All campus-based staff will be asked to complete this survey. It’s Micro which means no more than 5 questions! If you are interested in discussing the results and making recommendations for improvement of the Menu of Interventions please email Dorothy Garza to join a task-specific, time-limited committee – 2-3 meetings to be done by May 2023. Let’s build up this toolbox!

Atencíon, personal que atiende a estudiantes y familias que hablan Español: On March 8th from 11-1 at CIS Central, the Mental health and Wellness department will host a training in Spanish to support campus-based staff serving Spanish-speaking students and families. The entire workshop will be in Spanish and translation will not be offered. Topics to be addressed include:

  • Cultural overview
  • Basic Spanish for schools and social services
  • Engagement with Spanish-speaking students and families
  • Developing strategies and programming to serve Spanish speakers

Sign up will be available in Auzmor. The training will be recorded.

As a follow-up to this training, 2 clinical case consultation sessions will be offered virtually in late March and early April to staff individual situations. More information coming soon.

Representation matters!

We would like to invite members from the various programs to participate in a one-time focus group to discuss training needs related to mental health. If you are interested, please email Dorothy Garza by February 1st and I will send a calendar invite. Let’s think outside of the box when it comes to mental health as it relates to work with students, work with colleagues, work with supervisees, balancing work and personal life demands, etc.
