By helping first responders plan now, they ensure their family's legal affairs are in order before a tragedy hits. The 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit Wills for Heroes Foundation supports these Wills programs, giving back to the community and "protecting those who protect us."

"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend.

This month's column is written by Annie GómezShockey

Barb has a very busy schedule between running her office, singing with The Towne Singers, and flying between California and Florida to be a grandma. Rather than have a blank space where her column would be I offered to finally write an article about an idea I've had for a while. After starting down the road of writing, I learned that this will actually be a multi-part series. Today's article is about Martha (Marty) Walker.
Did you know Marty Walker was the first female attorney in our Franklin County Bar Association? It's a rumor I had heard and decided to investigate further. Marty joined our Bar in 1974 after graduating from the Dickinson School of Law in 1972 and practicing for a year in Lancaster at the firm of Barley, Snyder, Cooper and Senft. Marty was born and raised in Perkasie, PA, which is located in Bucks County. She graduated from Pennridge High School in 1965. After high school Marty went on to attend Wilson College graduating with a major in history in 1969.

Marty married John Walker (Senior Judge John R. Walker), who was the District Attorney at the time. In 1974 Marty and Judge Walker opened the law firm Walker and Walker. I asked Marty what it was like being the only female attorney in the county. She responded by stating it wasn't much different for her than it was in law school. Marty was one of only five women at Dickinson Law School, which is hard for me to imagine. When I went to law school in 2004-2007 at least one-third, if not half, of my class was made up of women.
She also described how having little to no females in a profession was not limited to law. She recalled that in 1974 there was only one female doctor in the county, two female realtors, no female dentists, and no female CPAs. There was a fair amount of unintentional sexist behavior. By that she meant, some of the senior male attorneys would call her sweetie or dear or honey. She didn't think that was any different than how they responded to any other woman in the work place. It was an unintentional approach to dealing with a woman on a one-to-one basis. She observed that those behaviors have changed a lot over the years as women have become more involved in the professions, if not ended completely.
When Marty joined our Bar, there was a completely different admissions process. Back then in order to be admitted to the Franklin County Bar Association an individual would have to be interviewed by a committee made up of senior members of the Bar. That Committee would then decide whether or not to recommend the interviewee for admission. She recalls a few of the questions directed at her during the interview being related to whether she wanted to be an attorney or be a mother. At that time, those two things were viewed by some as being mutually exclusive. Marty expressed that she can now see some positives to the old admissions process. The biggest advantage was that it was a way for senior members of the Bar to get to know new members. The more focused our law practices have become on specific areas of law; the less young and old attorneys interact with one another throughout the Bar.

Marty has had a jam-packed life outside of the office as well. She has been a bank director of the F& M Trust company since 1979. For many years, she was a licensed PIAA and Women's College certified basketball, field hockey and lacrosse official doing high school and college games all over the mid-Atlantic region. She has been secretary and president of the bar association and chaired the domestic relations committee for many years. She has been involved in the PBA as the chair of the PA County of Bar Leaders Association and a zone delegate. Marty chaired and served on numerous boards: Wilson College, United Way, Menno Haven, CVSM, Totem Pole Playhouse, Council for the Arts, Hospice, Salvation Army, Capital Theatre Foundation, CASD Foundation, Trustee of her church and chair of the fiancé committee there. Additionally, Marty taught at Wilson College and Penn State Mont Alto. Some of the awards she listed were from the PA Bar Association for pro bono work and the first Athena award from the Chamber of Commerce. Marty has two children and one granddaughter. Her daughter is the senior fiction editor for Random House Penguin Press in NYC and her son is a capital markets attorney with the LA firm of Latham and Watkins based in the Frankfurt Germany office.

In closing I asked Marty to give some words of wisdom to young attorneys starting out. Here is her response.
1. Be over prepared. Both the client and court can tell when you're not.
2. Work hard. Be willing to put in the time and energy it takes to do your job effectively.
3. Get involved in your community either as a volunteer or as a member of a Board of Directors. That's how you get to know people and how people get to know you.

Coming up next, I'll fill you in on Barbara Townsend, Kathleen Cramer, Deborah Hoff, and Eileen Finucane, who round out the first five female lawyers to join our Bar.
