April 2024 Issue #10

From District Governor Russ-.

Happy Spring fellow Super District 6400 Rotarians!

On April 8, don’t be alarmed when it starts getting dark in the early afternoon. If you go to Luna Pier, Michigan or the South Shore area of Essex County, Ontario, you will be able to briefly experience totality.

Time is running out to register for the District Conference. We have an incredible set of keynote speakers and will be featuring club projects addressing each of the 7 areas of focus. We are honored to have both Past RI President Ian Risely as well as PRIP Jennifer Jones joining us. It is not often, maybe rarer than a solar eclipse, to have 2 Past Rotary International Presidents at a district conference. You can register at our website, https://rotary6400.org/?page_id=3251

If you missed our Great Lakes Presidents Elect Training Seminar, you might consider running for your club President position next election. PETS is about growing and sharing. The best part is networking with fellow Rotarians from 7 districts in Michigan, Ontario, and Indiana. We had an impressive lineup of Rotary leaders as keynote speakers. We had fun too, especially Karaoke for Polio Friday night. If you missed it, ask your club president-elect.

Our monthly theme for April is the environment. This area of focus overlaps with all the other 6. Our district has been very active in this, including providing clean water in communities across the globe and pollinators right here in our local communities. Watch this newsletter every month as well as the district website (rotary6400.org) and Facebook page for event announcements. You may wish to join with Rotarians around the world at the Rotary Action Group for Environmental Sustainability (https://esrag.org/

As we approach the end of the Rotary year, our clubs are finishing up their current projects and laying the groundwork for next year. Don’t forget that 2023-24 District Grant project reports are due by May 30. Your applications for 2024-25 District Grant projects are due by May 30 as well. I beg you to apply to utilize our grant money for a community or international project. In each of the last 5 years, we have not used our entire District Grant allocation. This is money our club members donated to The Rotary Foundation 3 years ago. This money is available to all clubs that give an average of $100 per member to the foundation. Any unused allocation is not lost, it goes to help fund our global grants. Details are available on the district website.

Yours in Service,

DG Russ

District Rotarians & Friends Just Back From Ghana!

By District Governor Nominee-Designate Kim Spirou

Water is a life force that affects human health as no other element on earth. In fact, it is estimated that a child somewhere in the world dies from a water borne illness every 21 seconds. On this mission, seven rural villages were gifted with mechanized bore drilled water wells providing clean, potable water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Now girls who used to have to walk long distances to fetch water and often miss school can attend school regularly and use that time for study and family activities. Children will no longer die of waterborne illnesses and the overall health and well being of these communities will be dramatically improved thanks to Rotary. Read more about the team's trip here.

With Environmental Sustainability taking root within Rotary as the 7th Area of Focus, Rotary has designated April as the Environment Month.

As People of Action, Rotarians have been shaping the conversation on the environment for years

Fifty years ago, the first Earth Day was held on 22 April, 1970, launching a wave of action to protect our environment, including the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States. Other countries soon followed suit. Every year since, the day has been set aside to focus on mobilizing for action to protect our planet.

As people of action, Rotarians have been shaping the conversation on the environment for years, from addressing climate change that threatens entire food systems to fighting pollution that clogs our air and water. Rotarians are well-suited for the challenge. They use their connections to find creative solutions and take action to safeguard our vital resources.

The Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) assists Rotary clubs, districts and multi-districts in building awareness, inspiring action, and planning service projects that focus on environmental sustainability, awareness of climate change, and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • 18.4 million Dollars in Foundation global grant funding has been allocated to environment-related causes in the past five years through our support of community economic development and water, sanitation, and hygiene projects.

Great Lakes PETS is "magical"

Congratulations to all of the Super Rotary District 6400 Presidents-Elect (below) who learned about the "Magic of Rotary" the weekend of March 15th during Great Lakes Rotary PETS (Presidents-Elect Training Seminar) at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo.

District Governor-Elect Nick Krayacich (at left, on stage being photographed by his partner, Rotary Foundation Trustee Jennifer Jones) worked with the district leadership team to inspire the club presidents-elect to greatness in the coming Rotary year!

It's all about our members!

Detroit

The club recently inducted famous TV and film actor, Philanthropist, Author Hill Harper as a new member.

District 6400 Clubs At Work!

Tecumseh

On March 21st, club members worked with students in the FFA chapter at the Lenawee Intermediate School District Tech Center to make water pasteurization indicators, aka WAPIs. These simple devices can be used to test when water or milk has been heated enough to kill harmful bacteria.

This project fits in with one of Rotary's Area of Focus: providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene. At left, Tecumseh Rotarian Thomas Buxton works with students to seal the WAPIs' tubes.

Windsor-WIDE

The first #YQG Togetherfest, organized by the recently formed Rotary-WIDE and the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association (BANA) featured some 60 vendors and community service agencies, along with games and live entertainment March 9-10. It was a great success!

LaSalle-Centennial

The club hosted its Crystal Drop Gala on March 2, their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Each year the club recognizes a citizen of the Windsor-Essex region who demonstrates energetic and enthusiastic volunteer service internationally with the "Rajbir (Roger) Mann International Service Award."

This year's recipient is Ann Scott (top photo, center), the founder of the Windsor chapter of Days for Girls. Also pictured are Mary Lou Amlin, President of RCLC, and Rajbir (Roger) Mann.

Adrian Noon

The club hosted another social event for its members at the Sandbar Cafe in Addison Friday the 15th of March. Three members competed in a Chili Cookoff enjoyed by about 20 members and their spouses. All were delicious!

Taking home prizes were Cindy Moore, Bob Gardner and Doug Williams. Thanks to them and the hard work by Grace Garno and Michele Gardner from the Social Committee and to Bree, one of the owners of the Sandbar Cafe for allowing them to use her facility. She made THE best cornbread and brownies!

Plymouth AM

Three members of the Rotary Club of Plymouth AM were honored last week by the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.

Ted Barker (center), Owner of Shaw Construction, was singled out in the Large Company category for all his construction work around town plus his contributions to the Chamber.

Kate Rosevear (left), Owner of Travel Leaders Plymouth, was recognized for her many years supporting the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce as a board member and founder of the very popular Gift Certificate program for Plymouth businesses.

Beth Stewart (right), Executive Director of The Michigan Philharmonic, was also recognized for her many years of support of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and the Plymouth community. In addition to the Philharmonic Beth was also Director of the Plymouth Historical Museum for many years.

Windsor (1918)

The club solicited Easter Basket donations, ensuring that the children who benefit from the services of Children First in Windsor had a fun and exciting Easter! Thanks to the generosity of its members, the club achieved its goal of collecting 40 baskets.

Livonia

In conjunction with Livonia Park & Rec and Busch's Fresh Food Market, Rotarians provided manpower and funds for the annual Easter Egg Hunt, March 30th at Rotary Park!

Plymouth

The club celebrated its 100 years of service to the Plymouth Community while being honored at the Plymouth/Plymouth Township, Michigan Business Awards Dinner. (Below) Members of the club were on hand to accept the Special Recognition Award.
