Community members gathered on Saturday for a hands-on event focused on repair, sustainability, and community connection. Hosted at the Federal Way Library on 320th, the free Mending Fair invited people to bring in worn or damaged clothing, accessories, and other cherished belongings for expert repair.
The event was made possible through a partnership between the City of Federal Way, the King County Library System, and the Refugee Artisan Initiative. Skilled volunteers and artisans were on hand to fix everything from torn seams to broken zippers.
Beyond simple repairs, the gathering highlighted a mindset of reducing waste and rethinking consumption. By restoring items instead of discarding them, participants contributed to a more sustainable approach to everyday living.

| | FWPD Officer Christian Buitron Honored with Life-Saving Award | | |
On Dec. 17 at approximately 4:47 p.m., Officer Christian Buitron responded to a CPR-in-progress call at the 31600 block of Pacific Highway South. When he arrived, Officer Buitron quickly retrieved his department-issued Narcan and immediately ran to assist an adult male without hesitation. The individual was on the ground with CPR already being performed by a friend.
While CPR continued, Officer Buitron administered Narcan and then took over chest compressions. After about one minute of continued lifesaving efforts, the individual regained a pulse and began to regain consciousness.
Body-worn camera footage shows Officer Buitron’s calm and caring response throughout the incident. While providing aid, he can be heard encouraging him, saying “come on man, wake up.” Once he became responsive, Officer Buitron stayed by his side, offering reassurance and letting him know help was on the way.
Later in his shift, Officer Buitron made a point to check on him at the hospital, where he learned the individual was stable and recovering.
Officer Buitron’s actions reflect his dedication to helping others in their most critical moments. His quick response and steady care played an important role in saving a life. We are proud to recognize Officer Buitron with the Life-Saving Award and thank him for his compassion and commitment to our community!
