From the President: Sonia R. Jarboe, AIA
As the cherry blossoms announced the oncoming season of Spring, details are beginning to firm up for several major Chapter events.
Our largest event of the year, the 2022 Design Awards, are currently open and submittals are due May 26, 2022. With a new category, plus a few additional tweaks to the submission process, the program continues to recognize and celebrate our members’ achievements in design of the built environment and their commitment to design excellence in various practice groups. Take inventory of your recently completed projects and enter them in this year’s award program.
May kicks off a series of membership happy hours that will be held throughout our region. We are starting to get back together in-person and, weather-permitting, we will plan to host these get-togethers outdoors while we are all reacclimating ourselves to group events. Join us May 10 in Arlington (location to be announced next week) to reengage with the Chapter, network with the Board of Directors and Committee Leadership, and make new professional connections. Bring a colleague if you would like -- we would love to meet them!
We understand that everyone’s comfort level is different and would like to hear from you about which types of in-person events and interactions you would attend in the future. Tell us what types of events you want to see on the calendar by completing this one-minute questionnaire. We look forward to seeing you soon!
| In case you haven’t heard the news, the AIA NoVA Board of Directors has decided not to renew the Chapter House lease at 1101 Duke Street. Instead, a task force is conducting a strategic analysis and programming exercise to assess our current and future needs to identify what type of space will best fit those needs for the next 5 years. During this time, staff will continue to work virtually and deliver the same level of high-quality services to which everyone is accustomed. We will also be working in collaboration with our members’ firms and local businesses to host in-person events. Our temporary new address will be 215 N. Payne Street, Suite 310, Alexandria, VA 22314. Please email any questions to Executive Director, Jaclyn Toole, Assoc. AIA at [email protected]. | |

Potomac Shores Middle School
Moseley Architects
Dumfries, VA
Photographs © Judy Davis, Architectural Photographer
When booming enrollment required additional accommodations, Prince William County Public Schools and Moseley Architects collaborated closely to re-imagine the middle school experience. Potomac Shores Middle School signifies a major departure from PWCPS’ previous traditional school prototype to a 21st learning environment designed for world-class education.
The needs we identified shared a forward-thinking theme that would ultimately shape the new facility. PWCPS’ enhanced career and technical education program warranted purpose-built spaces where it could flourish. Incorporating design concepts common among high schools would allow 9th graders to enter schools that may be new to them, but not unfamiliar. Later to become acutely valued after social distancing, this building needed to bring people together through spaces for student collaboration as well as features for community use.
With capacity for 1,450 students, the three-story configuration dedicates a floor level for each grade, allotting them their own distinctive classrooms, extended learning spaces, maker spaces, and collaboration spaces. All maker spaces have direct access to outdoor learning environments for experiments, testing, and group work.

|
A STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) lab comprises three connected spaces for preparation, production, and material storage. As the building’s central hub, an expansive media center with soaring two-story windows invites an upward gaze into the sky of a world without limits.
Potomac Shores Middle School recently earned the People’s Choice Award for Architectural Exhibit from the Association for Learning Environments’ Southeast and Virginia chapters.

NCARB's Analysis of Practice:
Take the Survey
One of our component’s key priorities is to help advocate for advances in the profession of architecture. NCARB’s Analysis of Practice is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to help shape what is next for architecture regulation. As an AIA NoVA member, we are reaching out to invite you to participate in NCARB’s Analysis of Practice Study. The practice of architecture is constantly evolving, and this is an opportunity for us to help ensure licensure evolves with it.

Little Known Northern Virginia Fact: Fort Hunt National Park (in the Fort Hunt area of Alexandria) was used in World War II as an interrogation center for high-value German prisoners and also served as a location where scientists developed methods of escape for captured American soldiers. Referred to in coded communications only as “P.O. Box 1142”, it’s importance to the war effort was only declassified in the 1990s as more information about that time is publicized.
