Census 2020—You Count!
Be Counted.
The 2020 Census is quickly approaching, and it is important that people with disabilities and their families are ready to be counted! It is important that everyone is counted because the census data impacts many key things. For example, the census data is used to determine how much money state and local governments get for:
- Medicaid
- Housing vouchers
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Education programs
When there isn’t enough money, services and programs for people with disabilities can be cut. Census data is also used to determine how many representatives each state gets in the House of Representatives.
Census Day is April 1, 2020, and invitations to participate in the census will be sent out in March. For more information on why the census matters for people with disabilities and how the census process works,

Will you pledge to be counted? If so, you can

to submit your contact information to Arc of the US who will send you a reminder to fill out your census form in March.

Continuing the Conversation
Part of The Arc’s mission is to support full inclusion and participation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in their communities. The first things that come to mind are working in the community or taking typical classes in school. Our definition of true inclusion goes beyond that. When fully included, your son or daughter will have relationships with other people.
There are different types of relationships, including those with family members, friends, colleagues, and romantic partners. It is understandable for parents to feel nervous about their son or daughter with I/DD having romantic relationships. What really is important, though, is self-determination for persons with disabilities, which means making her/his own choices and receiving support in doing so.
One person with a disability may desire living on their own. Others may wish to live with housemates, a partner or a spouse. Your son or daughter may have no problem living at home, but still wants a “significant other” in their life. In any case, the topic of sexuality is something that should not be avoided.
Sexuality is more than what we do with our bodies
.
It’s about intimacy and feeling connected. It’s about how we relate to others and vice versa, and it’s about how we feel about ourselves and others. Sexuality is an aspect of ourselves that makes us all human.
