60 Voices That Shine - #30

It’s not easy to keep up with Helen Pietranczyk. She seems to have boundless energy. Lucky for us, she has directed a lot of that energy toward our chapter of The Arc!

Helen has served on The Arc’s Board since 2011 and just completed five years as president. She provided additional leadership as vice president, finance/investment committee chair, chair of the Office Relocation Task Force, and member of the Governance and Executive Committees. To The Arc, she has been an exemplary Board member, and so much more.

As the parent of an adult daughter with IDD, she brings her essential parent perspective to Board discussions while still focusing on the needs of The Arc and all people with IDD in our community. Recently retired, her professional experience includes call center management, work in the title and real estate industries, and two nonprofits.

As if her Board and professional accomplishments weren’t enough, Helen is also a fantastic human being with a heart the size of California. She’s one of those exceptional people who lifts others up and brings out the best in those around her.

We’re thoroughly delighted to honor Helen’s voice this week—a voice that radiates positive energy to The Arc and to everyone around her.

Is One Of These Jobs Right For You Or Someone You Know?

There are three job openings at The Arc and we’d like your help filling them. Perhaps you know someone who would appreciate working for an organization where every position is mission-focused and every staff member is valued? Maybe you are qualified to join our team in one of the positions?

These exciting new positions are accepting applications through mid-July, so don’t delay.

Director of Child & Family Advocacy - Two Openings

In response to the ever-growing need for advocacy for children and families, The Arc needs TWO new Directors of Child & Family Advocacy. Could you be one of them?

Our two new directors must have a passion for ensuring that all children have full access to our community and everything they need to live their best lives. They must be able to meet parents where they are on their journey, and to empower them to be their child’s lifelong advocate, while at the same time encourage parents to listen to their children’s voices as well.

The foundation of the Child & Family team is to educate and equip families with information on to how to navigate different systems, including private and public healthcare, financial, public education, behavioral health, recreational and other community access.

In addition, the Child & Family Team serves on community committees to represent the needs of people with IDD and we provide relevant training & outreach to parents and community stakeholders. This position requires working collaboratively with all staff to continuously strengthen and improve the effectiveness of The Arc’s programs across the lifespan (i.e., birth through end of life).

Chocolate? Vanilla? Strawberry? What's Your Favorite?

Despite competing with cakes, pies, and cookies, ice cream ranks right up there as a favorite American dessert. What’s not to like? It is sweet, creamy, and cold - all creating a satisfying feeling in your mouth.

A survey last year by YouGov of almost 20,000 adults in the U.S. gave us an idea of the most popular flavors of ice cream. Is your favorite in the top? Or, are you among the 3% who reported that they don’t eat ice cream?

Top Ice Cream Flavors
  • Chocolate (17%)
  • Vanilla (15%)
  • Strawberry (8%)
  • Butter Pecan (8%)
  • Mint Chocolate Chip (8%)

Ice cream has a very long history. In fact, some believe its beginnings go back to Alexander the Great who reportedly ate snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar. Not exactly the same as today’s ice cream but the desire for a cold and sweet treat was certainly appealing even long, long ago.

If you have a hankering for ice cream before or after our ice cream social on August 6, you can easily make ice cream at home with four simple ingredients and no special equipment. Sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, whipping cream, and your choice of mix-ins (like cookies) are all you need. CLICK HERE for a recipe from The Pioneer Woman, or CLICK HERE for a vegan version from The Conscientious Eater.

Even if you don’t want to make ice cream, you might want to make a drawing of an ice cream cone. CLICK HERE for video instructions to create a cute multiple scoop ice cream cone that folds out. Paper and markers or crayons are all that are needed for this fun summer project. The end result might make a cute homemade birthday card for someone with a summer birthday.

Now that we’ve fed your ice cream interest, hurry and RSVP for The Arc’s Ice Cream Social! The deadline is Friday, July 30. CLICK HERE.
