The Arc of Dauphin County is Hosting a Brown Bag Lunch Learning Series

In October 2016 The Arc of Dauphin County partnered with the Dauphin County Mental Health/Intellectual Disabilities Program and the Case Management Unit to offer a presentation on Special Needs Trusts and the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act.

That event generated a lot of interest and became the inspiration for the Brown Bag Lunch Learning Series.  The sessions are free (but registration is required) and attendees can bring their own lunch. The Arc provides coffee, tea and water. See below for details on how to register.

The next session will be held on Wednesday, August 2.  It will cover "Estate Planning for Individuals with Special Needs" and will be presented by Ali Bach, CFP®, from Conte Wealth Advisors, LLC and Scott Alan Mitchell, Esquire, from Mitchell & Young, PLLC.

The presenters will explain why special needs planning is necessary, what are the three types of Special Needs Trusts, how do they work, how are they taxed, how to preserve Public Assistance Benefits, and much more.

Mark your calendars now:  The following Brown Bag Lunch Learning Series event will take place on Wednesday, October 18  and it will be about "Life Care Planning."

What is a "Life Care Plan"?   It is a holistic approach involving an individual's network of advisors in the development of a life care plan that can help the person maintain the lifestyle that he or she needs. It is a coordinated program of future care planning, financial, and legal strategies for individuals with disabilities and their families.
This event will be presented by Michael Miller, ChSNC ®.

Michael is a Financial Advisor and Special Care Planner with Orrstown Financial Advisors. The ChSNC® is the only credential on the market designed to provide special needs families with an advisor competent to address their unique concerns. ChSNC® designees are equipped with the specialized skills needed to help parents and caregivers plan for the future with honesty, ethics and compassion. A ChSNC® can navigate the unique considerations, estate planning, special needs trusts, life insurance, tax deductions, healthcare issues, Medicaid complexities, and the emotional aspects of providing for a loved one with a disability.

Another date to save:  There will be an additional event on Thursday, March 15, 2018 . The topic will be:  " ABLE and Special Needs Trusts". The presenter will be Amy Dolan, esquire and president of ACHIEVA Family Trust.   More details on the event will be included in future newsletters.

A Message from our President and CEO

Look for complete details on our Golf Outing coming up on September  18th elsewhere in this issue.

If I could pass along one key bit of critical information to you, it is this:

Sponsors and players in the golf outing make our programs run here at The Arc of Dauphin County.  We are counting on this outing  to support our consumers!  Please sign up for a foursome, and more important:  Let us know who would be a sponsor!  We seek at least ten more sponsors!  Please send me any leads you have:, or call 717.920.2727!

O ur Faith Into Action Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 15th was a tremendous success.
This year, we merged our Family Fun Day with that of a bigger family fun day cosponsored by numerous area churches, and led by the staff and congregation of a church "right up the street" from The Arc of Dauphin County:  Harrisburg First Assembly of God.

At first, the church offered their spacious grounds for our Arc to hold its 11th annual Family Fun Day, and as we continued discussions, we all had a brilliant idea:  Merge the two events!

The result was over 1,600 people-registration records are still being counted but we know from early counts the attendance was at least this much (some estimates are closer to 2,000!)

The event featured the Harrisburg Police with Chief Carter on stage for some comments to the crowd, lots of games, face painting, bingo and pie walk and Fitness4Focus' obstacle course and pony rides and petting zoo plus a special educational exhibition by the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art-- all in the Arc area.  Also at the Festival: a business and health fair where businesses set up tables and gave demonstrations, a fabulous food tent featuring hot and cold food items and beverages, prizes galore,  a children's tent with many child-oriented activities, numerous grand "inflatables" and a professional "rock band style" stage set up with massive audio equipment and generators.  The stage and audio were managed by professional sound technicians and stage managers and featured three national performers, one an illusionist and the other two major recording artists who tour nationwide.   The emcee was James Crummel.

One of The Arc of Dauphin County's strong partners, Woodmen Life, was one of a handful of substantial donors who offered significant financial support for the event.  I am most thankful for our partnership with Woodmen Life; they always come through with strong support for our consumers and our mission.  Additionally, they always keep us supplied with a new American Flag for the flagpole outside our main building-it is one of the best American Flag displays between the Colonial Park area and the Pennsylvania Capitol building.

The event also featured many other major donors who wanted to help out The Arc including most of our board members, many staff members, and dozens of volunteers and consumers.

We thank everyone for their unwavering support, and can't wait until next year's Faith Into Action Family Fun Day.   My special gratitude to our own Arc Family Fun Day Committee chaired by Sam Primak, all our Board of Directors who donated and worked, board member Dianne LeBlanc for going above and beyond, and both Pastor Terry Lamer and Missy Cook of Harrisburg First Assembly of God.

Photos of the Family Fun Day Event!

Did you miss this year's Faith Into Action Family Fun Day on July 15th?

If so, you certainly don't want to miss it next year.

We are already starting to formulate plans.  An event this big takes a full 12 months to plan.

Watch for our announcements of July 2018 Faith into Action Family Fun Day.

In the meantime, here are some photographs of the event rated five stars by those we surveyed!

Arc Night at Harrisburg Senators vs Rumble Ponies

Michael Cruz on the field
Friday evening, July 21 was a perfect warm summer night, and a great  for Harrisburg Senators baseball.

It was an especially poignant event for one of our consumers, Michael Cruz, who was honored by the Senators with an honorary first pitch of the game. The Arc of Dauphin County was named "Community Partner of the Game." Michael had been practicing with his sisters in previous nights, and at Friday's game, he threw the ball straight and true to Senators Ryan Briney, #39.

A magic night, actors from the TV Show Seinfeld were on hand, and Michael was able to get photographed with them and autographs.

Many Arc supporters turned out to show their support including one board member, numerous staff members and their spouses, volunteers and families we serve, plus friends and colleagues of some of our consumers. The night concluded with a gigantic fireworks display at FNB Field.

Arc Art Show Returns this Fall!
Call Out for Artists & Volunteers

The once popular Arc of Dauphin County Art Show is returning this fall with some new features:

  1. It will be a travelling show, and will be in at least three different locations over a period of three months.   Artists can see their work shown in one stellar location after another, culminating in a final show reception.
  2. The show will be juried.  A team of judges will review the entire show before it goes out to be hung in the first location.  We expect all submitted artwork to be accepted for exhibition.  Beyond that first review, the jury will also pick a series of awards and will place a ribbon with each artwork receiving one of the numerous awards.  The ribbon will travel to the exhibitions with the artwork, and at the end of the show, will be given to the artist.

Would you like to submit artwork?  The competition is open to all consumers, all persons with special needs, living anywhere in the state of Pennsylvania!  Just call or have someone call for you to register your intent to participate.  There is no entry fee.  All we ask is that the artist give their work their best effort.  The media can be flat art, sculpture, photography, pottery.  Entry form with size requirements can be obtained from The Arc of Dauphin County.   Each artist can submit one entry.  Call The Arc's front desk:  717-920-2727 or e-mail to .

Calling all volunteers!   This week, noted Hershey area artist, Marie Gannon, volunteered to serve on the Art Show Committee.    We know several Arc of Dauphin County staff members will also volunteer, but we need more folks!  We need people to help transport and hang artwork in the various venues, we need volunteers to help with the reception and volunteers to help sort and track the artwork.  This is a big deal, and we welcome all the help we can get!  Please call 920-2727 and ask for Barb or e-mail

Nick Barrelet and Joe Bosche, two Knights and their local chapter, having learned of the significant forward motion of The Arc of Dauphin County in serving its constituents who have intellectual and developmental disabilities,  told Mr. George that the Knights of Columbus wanted to help support the Arc's good works.

"This gift couldn't have come at a more important time for the life of our agency," Mr. George said.  "We -and 'we' includes our consumers-are most grateful for the support of our community throughout Central Pennsylvania; today, we are blessed to have this support from our neighbors and friends at the Knights of Columbus."

Do you like organization?  The Arc of Dauphin County seeks energized, "want to make the world a better place" volunteers to help us with our new FOA (Friends of The Arc) program, filing, organizing our many closets of supplies, materials and other assets.  Even one day a month would be wonderful help!  Call Barb Bressler at 717.920.2727.

The "penthouse" level of our Respite Center Building (RCB) is becoming our Archive.  This beautiful space has its own independent heating and cooling system, it is very, very quiet on this floor, and you would be working on your own schedule to organize seven years of records.  The Archive will be divided into seven departments, and over time, the Archivist of The Arc will get all seven departments organized and searchable.  The Archivist candidate will need to pass FBI background checks, and other background checks.  Must also be able to lift a "banker's box" of files, and able to climb two flights of stairs to reach the Archive.  This is a very special volunteer opportunity for a very special person, and will remain open until filled.  For more information, please contact Craig George at , and specify in the subject line: ARCHIVES.

Your place to socialize and enjoy the music is The Arc of Dauphin County.  For nearly a decade we have been offering "First Friday Dances" complete with a DJ spinning your favorite tunes.  $5.00 covers entrance and hot dogs, cookies, soda, etc. (free to Charter Members of The Arc of Dauphin County)

The Arc of Dauphin County is Hiring!  E-mail to find out about any of the following opportunities:

CONSULTANT in the Positive Behavior Support Department.  A Bachelor's degree and certification/training in ABA techniques are requirements for this full-time temporary opportunity.
RESPITE CARE COUNSELOR - seeking one part-time person to provide support in our Respite program.

We also have the following unpaid internship available:

ADVANCEMENT ASSISTANT - responsible for assisting the organization in the development and implementation of its marketing, business development (fundraising, grant research and writing, etc.), and public relations plans

Help support our friends with disabilities through our advocacy, education, consumer programs, life in the community/inclusion, and so much more!  Your gift ensures our non-profit can continue to provide the best services possible.  Our new Respite Center, which will open after the first of the year, will also benefit from your generosity.  Please e-mail Craig George at , or call the main switchboard at 717.920.2727.

If you are thinking long term, so are we!  Planning for the future, The Arc of Dauphin County will soon launch a Planned Giving program, which will allow our supporters who own a house or other real estate, who have paid up life insurance policies, or who would like to contribute to a trust or an Arc Endowment, as well as many other planned gift vehicles, to think long term with us.  Did you know without proper planning, the largest benefactor of your estate will be Uncle Sam?  Many planned gifts pass outside of probate from you to your loved ones and other beneficiaries, such as The Arc of Dauphin County.  For a confidential consultation, please e-mail Craig George at or call the main switchboard at 717.920.2727.
