Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community 2017

The Arc of Dauphin County participated in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community on Saturday, May 20 at HACC's Harrisburg Campus.
From left, Barbara Bressler and Sam Primak with The Arc of Dauphin County speak to walkers Janeen Hawkins and Michael Cruz at the Highmark Walk.
Nearly 20 people braved the cooler temperatures and dreary weather to walk in support of our organization.  Despite the clouds and drizzle, the atmosphere was extremely positive.  Blaring music energized the walkers and set the mood.  A steady stream of visitors and walkers stopped by our booth to learn about the services we provide to individuals with special needs.  It was exciting to see the community rally behind so many nonprofit organizations!  We had a great time!
So far, we have raised almost $4,000, and to all donors and walkers: THANK YOU!!!  Your support means so much; not only to The Arc, but to the people we serve throughout Dauphin and surrounding counties.
And we're not done yet!  We will be collecting donations until June 30.  If you would like to make a contribution, please click HERE.  You can also pay by cash or check (payable to The Arc of Dauphin County), and deliver it either in person or through the mail to 2569 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, PA 17103.  Please be sure to indicate that the donation is for the Highmark Walk.
If you have any questions regarding contributions, please contact Sam Primak at sprimak@arcofdc.org or 717.920.2727.

There are many ways you can help make this year's festival one for the ages!
Due to the scope and size of the event, PLENTY of volunteers will be needed to help out.  If you or anyone you know is interested in being a volunteer, please email Barbara Bressler at bbressler@arcofdc.org or Sam Primak at sprimak@arcofdc.org.  They can also be contacted by calling 717.920.2727.  Please be sure to include your first and last name, phone number, email address, volunteer area, and availability (volunteers are needed from 11 AM to 5 PM).

Phillips Office Solutions Makes Major Donation to The Arc of Dauphin County
Support will have significant and positive impact on organization's marketing

In the spring of 2016, The Arc of Dauphin County began a massive effort to redesign all agency-related marketing materials.

"We knew that many of our informational brochures needed to be updated, and after some consideration, we decided that it was time for a general overhaul.  We decided to focus on creating rack cards for each of our programs," said Sam Primak, Director of Advancement with The Arc of Dauphin County.

From left, Sam Primak with The Arc of Dauphin County and Ryan Griffin with Phillips Office Solutions display The Arc's new series of rack cards.
Working with Keith Daubert, Principal and Creative Designer at Studio Design Graphic Communications in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, a group of Arc staff meticulously crafted the cards' language and design.  After seven months, The Arc had nine rack cards ready to print.

"We created cards for our Advocacy, Arc ADVANCE, Kids on the Block, Positive Behavior Support, Representative Payee, Computer Skills Training, and Community-Based programs, as well as a general information rack card and a card promoting the rental of our Community Room.  It was a massive project from a content and design point of view," said Primak.

Anticipating the need for large quantities, The Arc began to think about the huge responsibility of printing all rack cards.

"We knew we were going to need thousands upon thousands of cards printed, and of course, we had to consider the expense.  That's when Phillips Office Solutions stepped in to help," said Craig George, President and CEO of the Dauphin County Arc.

Ryan Griffin, Solutions Expert with Phillips Office Solutions, worked with Primak and George to have almost 13,000 rack cards printed at no cost to The Arc.

"When we were approached by The Arc to work on this print job, we understood, from a marketing standpoint, that the project would have a positive impact on the agency as well as the individuals they serve, and so we were happy to donate our printing services," explained Griffin.  "We truly hope that our contribution will allow them to reach a broader audience and promote their extremely important services on a much larger scale."

"The support from Phillips Office Solutions means so much to us.  It's invaluable.  They're true champions of The Arc and those we serve," Primak said.

Griffin added, "The relationship between Phillips Office Solutions and The Arc of Dauphin County is strong, and it's going to continue for a long time to come."

New Respite Day Camp Announced
Program offered to youth, aged 13-21

On June 12, The Arc of Dauphin County will launch a new program: Respite Day Camp!  This fun and engaging program will offer a variety of activities, as well as social and recreational experiences to youth, aged 13 to 21, while providing a much-needed respite to their families.  The program differs from Overnight Weekend Respite in that it is provided during the week, Mondays through Fridays, from 8 AM to 3 PM.

"We noticed that there was a real need for this type of service within the community and Dauphin County as a whole, and so we are very happy to meet that need and implement this wonderful program.  The number one goal for Respite Day Camp is for everyone participating to have fun," said Ken Seeger, Director of Consumer Programs at The Arc of Dauphin County.  "We want all campers to make new friends and build skills through involvement in activities such as arts and crafts, structured sports and field trips.  At the same time, we'll engage campers and help them maintain functional levels that may be lost over the summer," he continued.

In addition to providing opportunities that allow for true community integration, stimulating activities and parent relief, the program will also offer a safe social and recreational environment, as well as opportunities to explore the community.

The Respite Day Camp program is waiver-funded, and campers are able to participate one to five days week.  However, if an individual does not have waiver-funding support, they can still enjoy camp by way of a self-pay option - we now accept all major credit cards!  Those interested are encouraged to reserve their spaces quickly, as this is a limited offer.

"We hold our group size to only six to nine individuals each day," said Seeger.
To learn more about this exciting program, please contact Ken Seeger at kseeger@arcofdc.org or Barbara Sperber at barbarasperber@arcofdc.org.  They can also be reached by phone at 717.920.2727.

Marie Gamon Donates Masterwork to the Respite Camp Center

Marie Gamon
Acclaimed artist Marie Gamon, of Middletown, whose work has been featured in articles in The Patriot News, The Lebanon Daily News and many other publications, has made a major donation to The Arc of Dauphin County.  Ms. Gamon's work has won critical acclaim in juried art shows including the Harrisburg Arts Association's competitions, and her work hangs in galleries throughout Central Pennsylvania and beyond.

The art was donated specifically for the new Arc Respite Camp Center.  It is a giclée canvas mounted as a "gallery wrap."  J. Arthur Davis of Hummelstown did the giclée imaging.  The peaceful scene portrays a tranquil body of water and a small outcropping along the banks, which issues tall trees pushing skyward and lush "understory" plants.  Titled Lake Winnepausakee, Ms. Gamon pained it while on vacation in Maine.

"I wanted to help The Arc with its direction of creating a welcoming, calming and 'cozy home' feel in its Respite Center.  I shared two images with the decorator, Rosalie George, who donated her services to carefully plan the colors inside the center--every detail down to the angle of the flooring and the sizing and angle of columns in order to create a tranquil interior vista.   She chose the woods/sky/water theme for those reasons," stated Ms. Gamon.

"Marie's painting now creates the visual anchor we've been searching for and it makes a stunning impact - her artistry tells a scene story that visitors can quickly grasp and appreciate," Mrs. George said.  "The colors in the painting mirror some of the colors we have used in window art; in addition, they marry well with all other visual elements in the room.  The painting brings the visual experience together and compliments everything else in the room.  Her work is the 'icing on the cake.'" she explained.

"We are doubly blessed to have Marie's painting here because not only is her artwork on site, but she also works part-time for us in our Arc ADVANCE Pre-Employment Transition Services department providing training in the schools as a counselor.  In fact, Marie has been involved with The Arc of Dauphin County for almost five years," explained Ken Seeger, Director of Consumer Programs.

"In late summer or early fall, we will have our Respite Open House, which will give our readers a chance to see Marie's wonderful work and to enjoy the "view" it creates.  Please keep watching The Arc of Dauphin County News for an announcement of the open house," stated Arc of Dauphin County President and CEO, Craig George.

The Arc Art Show Returns!

We are happy to announce that The Arc of Dauphin County's Art Show is returning in November 2017, and this year, we will be offering a traveling exhibition, which will be featured in multiple locations throughout Dauphin and surrounding counties!
Details are being finalized now - expect an opening reception, an exhibition traveling to five or six locations over three months and a final reception where exhibition prizes will be awarded.
We invite all people with special needs to participate.  NO ENTRY FEE!  We expect to find a sponsor to cover costs so that those we support will not have to pay to participate.
Artwork may be in any medium or of any subject.  Prizes will be awarded in the Best of Show, Voters' Choice, People's Choice, and Honorable Mention categories to the following age groups:
  • 6-11 years of age: Youth Division
  • 12-17 years of age: Teen Division
  • 18 and older: Adult Division

Artwork must be submitted to The Arc of Dauphin County at 2569 Walnut Street in Harrisburg between October 16 and October 23, 2017.  For more information on rules, regulations, judging, prizes, and entry procedures, please click HERE

Volunteers needed!  It takes "people power" to take an exhibition down, move it across town and re-hang it in a new venue.

Sponsors needed!  It takes supportive sponsorship to cover the costs of award ribbons and certificates and two receptions.  We love providing over the top recognition to our sponsors!
If you would like to be an Art Show volunteer or sponsor, please contact Sam Primak at 717.920.2727 or sprimak@arcofdc.org.

PA ABLE Savings Program

In April, the Pennsylvania Treasury Department launched the Pennsylvania ABLE Saving Program (PA ABLE).  PA ABLE is an extraordinary, new, low-cost saving vehicle that allows people with disabilities and their families to have greater control of their finances and to plan for a more financially secure future.

A PA ABLE account helps people to save for a wide range of disability-related expenses without jeopardizing government benefits.*  Plus, savings benefit from several great tax advantages, including tax-free growth when used for a wide range of qualified disability expenses.

Savings in a PA ABLE account are not counted in determining entitlement to any federal needs-based benefits (with a limitation for Supplemental Security Income*) or entitlement to many Pennsylvania needs-based benefits, including Medical Assistance.

PA ABLE accounts can be used for day-to-day expenses, as well as any large or long-term savings goals.  They can also be part of parents' planning for the financial security of their adult children with disabilities for the time when the parents may no longer be able to provide financial support or care.

When you save with a PA ABLE Savings Program account, you may choose to direct your contributions into one or any combination of seven investment options.  Six are asset-allocation investment options with varying blends of stocks, bonds, and cash - with the combinations ranging from conservative to aggressive.  The seventh option is a FDIC-insured interest-bearing checking account, with a debit card, provided through Fifth Third Bank.

If you are looking for more information, consider having a presentation on the PA ABLE Savings Program at your next event, conference, or meeting.  You may learn more and enroll online at PAABLE.gov or email info@PAABLE.gov today!

*See PAABLE.gov or call 855.529.ABLE (2253) for more information.
The Pennsylvania ABLE Savings Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Treasury Department.  Before investing, please carefully read the Disclosure Statement (available at PAABLE.gov or by calling 855.529.2253) to learn more about the program, including its effect on federal and state benefits, investment objectives, risks, fees, and tax implications.
Medicaid Helps Alice to Survive and Thrive
From The Arc of the United States

Soojung's daughter, Alice, was born with Rett syndrome and relies on Medicaid to get the health care and services she needs to survive and thrive.  The Arc is releasing their story, the fifth in a series featuring people who rely on Medicaid and/or the Affordable Care Act.
Cuts to Medicaid would be devastating to their family and to millions of others.  Unfortunately, massive cuts to Medicaid have already passed the House of Representatives, and are being considered by the Senate as part of the American Health Care Act.  And news reports suggest that President Trump's 2018 budget proposal will include even deeper Medicaid cuts.
It is critical that we share stories like these to highlight the importance of Medicaid in the lives of people with disabilities and their families and urge Congress and the President to protect Medicaid.
Please share this video widely with your networks to show the impact of cutting Medicaid and repealing major health care protections. Ideas for sharing include through your social media channels, your chapter members, staff, volunteers, advocates, state coalition partners, your Members of Congress, and state elected officials.
And if you missed the first four videos in the series, check them out now: "If I could say one thing" , "Calvin's Story" , "Meet Thelma" and "Meet Bryan."
We're going to the ballpark on July 21, 2017! More details to come!
