Instrumental Rehearsal Rm
|
|
The Wayne State College Peterson Fine Arts Addition & Renovation project will include a renovation of a portion of the building, in addition to a new band and choral rehearsal wing, and an extended main entry. This project was conceived out of necessity to address the concerns of the National Association of Schools of Music that gives accreditation to music programs across the country. The existing spaces of the building are currently not conducive to instrumental or choral rehearsals. During programming, it was determined that it was not financially rational nor feasible to accommodate a choral or instrumental rehearsal space within the existing building, because it was not possible to provide the required volume of space necessary for the musical ranges the rooms were intended to facilitate. Additionally, the building is riddled with acoustical issues including a lack of speech privacy and noise bleed of instruments from the practice rooms in the lower level to adjacent rooms and sometimes between floors.
We have enjoyed teaming with Wayne State College to address their needs at the Fine Arts Building. We have had meetings with all of the staff in the building, spoken with students regarding their use of the space and have reviewed existing mechanical and electrical concerns with the facility maintenance staff. As part of our approach we have reviewed the building and have studied the existing drawings to determine shortcomings and opportunities for improvement within the existing building. The project will provide a new instrumental rehearsal room that will accommodate 150 students, even the marching band, and a choral rehearsal room that will fit 100 students. These occupancies allow for growth of the department as projected by the college. The spaces will provide a two story volume to replace rooms that are currently located in the lower level of the existing building that occupy a single floor with relatively low ceilings for use as rehearsal rooms. Along with the rehearsal rooms, the east addition will include two faculty studios and three practice rooms for percussion instruments. These rooms are being specifically provided for use by percussion due to the acoustical range that is produced by the instruments and the specific construction requirements based on that range.

Blair School District in collaboration with the design team lead by Jackson – Jackson & Associates, Inc. worked with several community partners including Metro Community College to revision 14,000 square feet of the existing high school building into state-of-the-art Industrial Technology Labs for Welding, Construction, Automotive and Small Engines, Robotics, Drafting, and Art. Staff at Blair High School are currently moving into the renovated spaces. Metro Community College will offer college credits this fall for welding and they are working to develop more college credit opportunities for the students. There has been so much excitement and interest in these expanded programs that they are at full capacity for the 2021-2022 school year with a waiting list.

Midlands Business Journal
Jack H. Jackson
Jack H. Jackson, JJA C.E.O., was featured in the Midlands Business Journal, June 4, 2021, Special Architecture Section. Jack commented for the article titled "Design Trends Shaped by Pandemic Working Conditions". Jack indicated that design trends are being driven by financial consideration and noted that multi-use space is in high demand due to construction cost. Jack also stated that there is a long lead time for building materials, thus there is a major trend in putting out bidding packages earlier so contractors can get the materials ordered.
