What's Happening in November
November Judge & Guest Artist
Betsy Schoepf
Saturday, November 9th
12:30 pm - 3:00 pm
120 108th Avenue, Treasure Island City Hall Auditorium
Betsy Schoepf has been painting in oils for over 40-five years. Those years have been broken by long periods of child-raising, employment, and rare occasions of producing a painting or two. She looked forward to the day when she could concentrate on studying and developing her painting skills, now retired she is doing just that.

Betsy enjoys painting her surroundings. It can be a still life made up of familiar objects in her home. Or it might be the small cottages in Indian Rocks Beach where she has lived for over 40 years. One of her favorites is the beach itself. With its ever-changing moods, seasons, visitors, bits of flotsam and jetsam, the painter is presented with a vast array of subjects.

Doug Land has drawn and enjoyed art since he was a young child. It wasn't until Doug was in his late 40's, and after many years as an insurance adjuster and a realtor, that he was able to commit to being a full-time artist.

Doug's talent has allowed him to do illustration work and courtroom sketches for the news media industry. His work has been published in newspapers, television news, and online. These days, he enjoys teaching drawing and finding time to sketch daily. His focus is on teaching adults the basics of drawing to help in their art hobbies, careers, or other artistic endeavors. Doug also leads sketching at the gallery sessions at the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art in Downtown St. Petersburg.

Over the past years, Doug has been in various shows and has received many awards. He has also judged many art exhibits, including ours. Doug says: "I enjoy the process of drawing and getting ideas down on paper. Often, I don't work up the sketches into finished pieces, as I move on to new sketches. One consistent aspect of my art has been the figure drawing and the discipline of working regularly with other artists. For years I helped monitor sessions, now I just enjoy attending them to draw. Teaching has been a second career I enjoy and look forward to continuing for many years. I like the challenge of recording thoughts and observations through the use of simple materials such as everyday pens, pencils and copy paper as I go about my daily activities."

Doug enjoys a variety of art and artists; he tries not to be limited to what he studies. He has enjoyed the art of figure drawing for many years and is inspired by daily sketching as he goes through the day. Doug usually has some paper, pencils, and pens with me so he can make some sketches and visual notes of what interests him. Local artist Jack Barrett advised Doug to draw a line a day. He took that advice to heart and tries to sketch daily. Now, Doug advises others to try to work at their art a little each day. The best thing a new artist can do is not give up, keep studying, and practice the art they enjoy.
