At this time of year, the chorus we hear over and over again around the studio is "why am I so tired?"
Seasonal change is in full swing. Shorter, brisker days transform the landscape around us. Shifts within us abound. Changes in energy levels, sleep-wake cycles, immune response and mood. Changes in interests and curiosities.
There is a beautiful passage in Katherine May's book, Wintering that describes how deciduous trees release the energetic burden of feeding their leaves to fortify and protect themselves for winter.
"The chlorophyll begins to break down, revealing other colours that were always present in the leaf, but which were masked by the abundance of green pigment: oranges and yellows, derived from carotene and xanthophyll. Other chemical changes take place to create red anthocyanin pigments. The exact mix is different for each tree, sometimes producing bright yellows, oranges, and browns, and sometimes displaying as reds or purples.
Managing energy is the art of supporting our vitality. It is a skillful, lifelong practice of sensing, listening and being responsive to change.
For each of us, this balancing act is unique based on circumstances and interests. For all of us, prioritizing movement, reflection and meaningful social connection can nourish and support us through change.
