Light a prayer candle for our Immaculate Mother in August.

FACESOFDEVOTION: The Assumption of Mary

August 15 is the feast of the Assumption of Mary, a day when we recall and celebrate the ascension of the Blessed Mother in body and soul into the glory of heaven. Fr. Timothy Lyons, CM, director of The Miraculous Medal Shrine, and Fr. Francis Sacks, CM, tell us that the Blessed Mother was spared the sadness and suffering of death by the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ. In this way, the Assumption is a source of hope for us all.

Born August 12, 1591, in Northern France, St. Louise de Marillac lived among the aristocracy although she never knew her mother. As a resident student of a Dominican convent, she developed a strong devotion to the poor and ailing. After applying unsuccessfully to become a religious, she married at 21 and was widowed at 34. St. Louise continued her lifelong commitment to service and co-founded the Daughters of Charity with St. Vincent de Paul.
