Punktkilde Introduces the Radial Magnet Series
Punktkilde’s Radial Magnet Series, from 2.25” to 3.5”, applies its exclusive dual suspension design with a dual-ring radial structure on a magnetic motor system for better BL(x) and excellent Kms(x) symmetry performance. The key feature on this design delivers more even magnet field around the voice coil, contributed to low magnetic field leakages. Another key attribute on this design is that during high excursions, the BL losses are very low and contribute to very low distortion compared to conventional magnetic motor designs. Read More

Starting Your Business
An Incubator for the Audio Industry
Most of our readers recognize me as the narrator behind the curtain. For about 25 years I have been writing for Voice Coil and all the other publications that the late Ed Dell founded and which are now combined in audioXpress, and published by KCK Media Corp. In the audio industry, we all need accurate information to make our decisions and to not be blindsided. While most of our readers are essentially technology-oriented, in order to avoid business pitfalls we must also offer a broader view, the 35,000-foot view that is SWOT: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

I have seen many great ideas from engineers, inventors, and entrepreneurs but sometimes they reach beyond their own or their team’s capabilities, and need a strategic partner that can contribute technical support, or industrial design, or branding and distribution channels, or simple business sense. Sometimes the idea is too early for the technology infrastructure or the market’s appetite. The first soundbar was launched back in 2008 by Soundmatters from an idea by the late Dr. Godehard Guenther. But consumers didn’t know what a soundbar was or why they would need one, and only years later did today's market leaders create the soundbar product category. Now, consumers understand what it is, why they need it, and they ask for it - while the integrated AV receiver is fading into a boutique market position.

Startups with great ideas must line up their ducks - understand the market timing, figure out how to obtain the right funding, the appropriate factory partner, and how they will sell through to the end-customer. Startup incubators have sprung up all over the place, but when you work with several inexperienced companies at once, the result is often unsuccessful.
Now, Audio & Loudspeaker Technologies International (ALTI), formerly known as the Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing & Acoustics (ALMA) International, has stepped up. ALTI? As Barry Vogel, ALTI’s director explains, “In the spirit of change, the former Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing & Acoustics (ALMA) International, expanded its mission and identity to ALTI. Under the new designation, ALTI embraces and promotes more than just the loudspeaker industry but the whole audio industry ecosystem and related and connected technologies.”

With that same spirit of becoming a full-service organization for the audio industry, ALTI has created an audio-centric incubator initiative. “Having a great idea, or a hot invention, or a groundbreaking innovation is not a guarantee of success. Just ask the millions of entrepreneurs who have been disappointed when their dreams of success became frustration. Don’t be discouraged. Be tenacious. Find the resources and the skills needed to succeed,” Vogel adds.

ALTI’s incubator program is designed for actual companies or organizations with some sort of business plan and at least a few dollars from investors, crowdfunding, or friends and family.

While much of my consulting work with Menlo Scientific has been for the larger companies (Apple, Intel, Microsoft, Dupont, Monster/Beats, OPPO Digital, and others), we also work with innovative startups that have the spark and game-changing ideas and that are looking for growth and some level of support in the execution of their business plan. And a nice piece of our business at Menlo is match-making between these companies, some looking for a chance, others looking to grow, diversify, or simply invest.

But quite a few of the opportunities that knock on our door are with early stage startups that are still struggling to get investors, have not had a chance to test their concept, and are not yet a fit for our business model. This segment is underserved and needs to be nurtured, perhaps not by a private business like my firm, but from an industry organization – in this case ALTI and its Incubator program.

ALTI has assembled a team of experienced experts in business management, finance, marketing, media, and more, to improve the odds of successfully launching a new company and product. Menlo Scientific is fully involved with this initiative to support ALTI in providing honest guidance, working with industry veterans who know the pitfalls and have the right connections.

In the initial stages, ALTI’s Incubator program can help get your company recognized and bring your technology, ideas, and products to the right people. And any reference - as we have done many times to promising companies and product concepts in this newsletter - can really help you at that critical early stage. No one can guarantee success, but having the right people in front of you can make all the difference.
The first ALTI Expo and last ALMA International Symposium & Expo happened in 2019. Click to remember how it was and what happened, before we get to the next one…
The ALTI Incubator program is not free. To enlist, you need to apply for that specific package that includes a 1-year ALTI Corporate Membership with full benefits and a series of initiatives to introduce and promote your product/technology worldwide. This program includes a free initial consultation with any of the group’s Incubator consultants, and a special Incubator booth at ALTI-EXPO in 2021 or whenever the next ALTI-EXPO takes place (the regular Member price is $1499). Overall, this is a $4499 value.

Barry Vogel, all too aware that launching an incubator, let alone a new company into this world is daunting these days, is offering all those benefits for only $1799. As he reinforces, “ALTI has a long history of supporting new technologies and helping startups to connect with the right people and companies to move from innovation to successful business. We won’t make your business successful, but we will help you to make your business successful.”

This article also serves to confirm that the ALTI Incubator program, in close partnership with KCK Media, will receive full support from Voice Coil and audioXpress magazines. Companies enlisted in the program will have a chance to explain their concepts by submitting articles to any of the publications, as appropriate. We will also cover the companies that are part of the program in The Audio Voice newsletter.

Meanwhile, a reminder that the ALTI Incubator program will be also a key component of the next ALTI-EXPO and any presence from ALTI at future events and trade shows. ALTI-EXPO 2021 is scheduled to return to the DoubleTree by Hilton in Orlando, FL, from October 23-25, just before InfoComm. 2021 is ALTI’s 60th year serving the Audio and Loudspeaker Technologies Industry. If being at ALTI-EXPO isn’t possible, Incubator newcomers can enjoy full Corporate Member benefits for a full year and will continue to receive the exposure needed and have access to consultancy as needed.

For question and discussion of the Incubator options, contact Barry Vogel by email or call 602-388-8669.

Another path to understanding a new company’s SWOT is through Menlo Scientific’s “audit program.” Perhaps we can describe the ALTI incubator as a type of debutant finishing school, and as we work with the new companies in the ALTI incubator, Menlo can help find the strategic partners or investment needed for new projects.
ALTI Incubator offers guidance, access to people who know the pitfalls, and those who have the right connections.

A 25W OTL Tube Amplifier
By Tim Mellow
This OTL tube amplifier project is the topic of many forum threads, in particular in DIYaudio.com, where countless of builders from all over the world have exchanged experiences about building, testing, and modifying this design. Tim Mellow, the author, and his company Mellow Acoustics, currently focus on electrostatic speaker designs - and would hardly have guessed the enormous impact that his article would have since it was published in audioXpress. More than a decade since the original publication, many readers still actively search for information and share the schematics, and one of the reasons for the following is directly related to the fascination for tube amplification and OTL topologies. Tim Mellow's design explores a different output stage using a novel combination of local feedback and current drive in order to achieve good symmetry and cancellation of even harmonics. It was about time to make the original text available online for everyone. This article was originally published in audioXpress, February 2010.  Read the Full Article Now Available Here

The BWX-6501 Midbass from MISCO’s Bold North Audio Line
By Vance Dickason
This Test Bench article characterizes the BWX-6501 Midbass driver from MISCO’s Bold North Audio Line. MISCO (Minneapolis Speaker Co.) is the oldest OEM driver manufacturer in the US, founded in 1949, and Bold North Audio is its new brand, launched in 2019 with a nearly exact replacement woofer for the ubiquitous Yamaha NS10 studio monitor, the 6.5” MS-10W featured in the February 2019 issue of Voice Coil. The Bold North lineup was recently expanded to include two new 6.5” XBL2 motor woofers. The BWX-6501 and the BWX-6502, are two high performance 6.5" high excursion woofers with an XBL2 motor design and 10mm linear Xmax. These new models are all designed and manufactured in MISCO’s own facility in St. Paul, MN. Both are fully Klippel verified and feature dual inside-outside copper shorting rings in the motor to greatly reduce distortion. The BWX-6501 design allows for a wide range of crossover points and responds from 40Hz to 4kHz for midbass applications. This article was originally published in Voice Coil, December 2020.  Read the Full Article Now Available Here
