The Federal Way Lions Club hosted its 21st Annual Scholarship Car Show this past Saturday, drawing car enthusiasts, families, and community members to The Commons back parking lot.
The event showcased a wide variety of classic and custom cars, from vintage hot rods to muscle cars and restored classics, all polished to perfection. Attendees strolled through the rows of vehicles, chatted with proud owners, and cast their votes for fan favorites.
More than just a celebration of automotive history, the car show serves a greater purpose. It raised funds for scholarships benefiting high school seniors in Federal Way Public Schools. Thanks to the generosity of participants and supporters, the Lions Club continues its longstanding tradition of investing in the future of local students.
| | Federal Way Farmers Market Launches New Location in September | | |
The Federal Way Farmers Market is moving on up! Beginning on Saturday, Sept. 5, the Market will be held on the Civic Plaza Lawn next to the Federal Way Performing Arts & Event Center, just up the steps from the current location on South 316th Street.
The Market is open every Saturday through Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Until Sept. 5, visit the Market at its current location on South 316th Street between Town Square Park and the Federal Way Performing Arts & Event Center.
Whether you're stocking up on fresh ingredients, grabbing lunch, or simply enjoying a summer morning, the Federal Way Farmers Market is the perfect place to shop local, support small businesses, and connect with the community.
| | Changes Coming to King County Metro Transit and Sound Transit Services | | |
The end of August is bringing new transit options to Federal Way and communities across King County.
King County Metro Transit is expanding service across the county and bringing its Metro Flex service to Federal Way. Nine new routes and more than 3,000 additional bus trips are being added each week, providing better connections to new South King County Link light rail stations.
Beginning Aug. 31, Metro Flex will offer on-demand rides that connect people with neighborhoods, transit hubs and other local destinations. Visit the King County Metro Transit website to learn more about Metro Flex and find out more information about the changes.
Sound Transit is adding and adjusting ST Express service beginning Aug. 29. The new routes are designed to complement the expansion of the Link Light Rail 1 and 2 Line services.

| | Community Members Bring Electronics and Appliances to Recycling Event | | |
TVs, freezers, and microwaves, oh my! Residents came to the South King Tool Library last Saturday as we hosted our Drive-Thru Large Appliances and Electronics Recycling event. It was a chance for Federal Way residents to recycle materials in an environmentally-friendly way.
More than 400 cars came through the event with materials to recycle.
Our Environmental Services team hosts recycling events throughout the year. It’s the best way to be sure you are disposing of various items in a way that keeps Federal Way green. Visit our Community Events page to find out when the next recycling event will be hosted in Federal Way.
| | Free Back to School Haircuts Offered at Town Square Park on Aug. 25 | | |
The City of Federal Way is partnering with local community hairstylists to provide free back-to-school haircuts to local residents on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 12-7 p.m. at Town Square Park. The haircuts are available to kids ages five to 18.
Multiple stylists and barbers from across the region will be donating their time and talent to help as many kids and teens as possible look and feel their best for the first day back to school!
| | FWPD Names Lt. Peterson Supervisor of the Year for 2025 | | |
Lieutenant Nic Peterson was selected as the 2025 FWPD Supervisor of the Year in his role as the Special Operations Unit (SOU) supervisor. He excelled in managing the unit, which started the year with only five officers but ended the year with nine.
He diligently trained new officers in the mission of SOU and built them into a strong, cohesive team. Under his leadership, SOU officers increased their patrols and enforcement efforts.
Lt. Peterson oversaw partnerships with city departments to remove homeless encampments. He guided SOU in preparation for the new light rail stations, attending numerous meetings and ensuring his officers received the necessary training.
| | Night Construction for Street Preservation Projects Underway | | |
Night construction work is currently ongoing at two major locations in Federal Way: South 320th Street and 21st Avenue Southwest. Night work has been selected because it allows the project to be completed more safely and efficiently than daytime construction.
During the day, traffic volumes are significantly higher, making it difficult to close lanes without causing major congestion, longer travel delays, and increased safety risks for both drivers and construction crews.

High Friction Surface Treatment Project
Aug. 24 through Sept. 2

High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) installation and striping operations are scheduled at six locations throughout the City Aug. 24 through Sept. 2. The primary purpose of this project is to increase safety along major traveled curves.
To safely complete this work, each roadway will be partially closed for one day, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the scheduled construction date for that location. Please allow extra travel time and use alternate routes if possible. We appreciate your patience and cooperation while these safety improvements are completed.
