SELF-CARE AND STRESS MANAGEMENT

This past year has taken an emotional toll on all of us. The combined stress of working and schooling online, strained financial responsibilities, and social distancing, amongst other things, made 2020 an emotionally challenging year. This training will delve into tips, tricks, and tools around self-care practices and managing stress. The trainers will draw on relevant videos and articles, established self-care techniques, and more to help prepare you to manage the stressors in your life. Participants will be asked to practice these techniques throughout the training, so come prepared to participate and learn with us!

WHAT WE BRING: WHITE YOUTH WORKERS IN COMMUNITIES OF COLOR

Good youth work requires a strong sense of self on the part of the youth worker, but all too often, whiteness is awkward for white youth workers (and youth) to talk about. This 2-day, 8-hour training will offer participants room to talk about the challenges of addressing, confronting and embracing their identities as white youth workers, their reasons for working in communities of color, and what they can’t and shouldn’t bring to the work.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT 101

A core value of our work at the BEST Initiative is Positive Youth Development. We believe in the voices and power of young people, and train youth workers to support their youth in all areas of their growth. With that in mind, we are offering another session of Youth Development 101, a two-day, six-hour exploration of youth development principles and practices. Participants will learn an appropriate common language for discussing youth development, and will explore information about positive youth outcomes, developmental outcomes, and resiliency.

BUILDING A PEACEABLE YOUTH GROUP

Part of running a safe and effective youth program is working with young people to set boundaries and expectations for their experience in the program. This training will explore how you can set yourself (and your youth) up for success in your work by working with your youth to build a more peaceable program. The trainers will explore boundary setting, behavior management, and conflict resolution strategies in this interactive training, illustrating these concepts through case studies, scenarios/role plays, and small group discussion. Participants will leave this training more prepared to address any behavioral issues that may arise in their programs by developing solutions through a Positive Youth Development framework.
