Mason's Message: The Home Stretch

The end of the school year is approaching so quickly! It seems like someone pushed the fast forward button ever since we returned from Spring Break.

The months of April and May bring numerous employee recognitions, from bus drivers to school nurses, administrative assistants to teachers. It's a wonderful opportunity for us to recognize how much of a team effort it takes to make our District successful and ensure we are meeting our mission of college and career readiness for our students.

That being said, I just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication: those early mornings, late nights, weekends; for putting our students first, for taking pride in the work that you do, for persevering through obstacles and challenges.

As our school year draws to a close, the tremendous effort that each and every member of BOUSD has put forth is evident in the success of our students.

Let's make that final push in these last weeks, and end 2017-18 even stronger than we started.

Brea Canyon Coyote College & Career Open House

In response to previous years’ faltering Open House participation, the staff of Brea Canyon High School decided to change the forum of their open house event. With a list of community college partners obtained from the BOHS counseling department, BCHS went to work in organizing their Open House.

Parents were welcomed with music and tacos provided by the parents and family of BCHS teacher Jesus Horta. As parents signed-in, they were given a golden HOWL card and instructed to visit classrooms and fill-out a HOWL card as if they were BCHS staff in acknowledging their student as an Honorable, Organized, Well-rounded Learner in sharing the PBIS experience with families. From their conversations with teachers, parents were asked return to sign-in table to place their students’ HOWL cards the Coyote box for a PBIS raffle at the end of the night.

Families then made their way into the community college room where the US Army, Fullerton College, Coastline College, Cypress College, Santiago Canyon College, Santa Ana College and Orange Coast College were available to distribute information and talk to students and families about their programs. Additionally, Megan Labare, BOUSD CTE Counselor on Special Assignment, was on hand to give families information regarding Summer ROP opportunities.

Twenty-two of the sixty-five BCHS families were in attendance, equalling to roughly 34% family engagement for the school. BCHS is looking forward to building on this event in planning for future events that connect families and college/career readiness for students.
BOHS BITA Students Take Top Honors at Local Building Competition

We are so proud of this outstanding group of Brea Olinda High School Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) students who placed 3rd in the Design Build competition on April 28th - 29th. The team demonstrated great teamwork and mastery of skills and kept their drive and enthusiasm in high gear up until the very end.

A special thank you to their instructor Mr. Axtell for being their team leader and guiding them through the competition.

Arovista Debuts New Innovation Lab

Innovation is in the air at Arovista Elementary as we officially celebrated the grand opening of their new Innovation Lab with a special ribbon cutting ceremony this week. Thanks in part to generous donations from Rotary Club of Brea and the Orange County Department of Education, Arovista was able to open an Innovation Lab where students can work on projects using the latest technologies of their choice, such as Chromebooks, programmable robots and a 3D printer!

We are so thankful for the support of our community for making this room a reality for our students!
BOUSD's Natural Gas Bus Filling Stations

Did you know that several years ago, the Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD) installed a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station in the bus maintenance yard with the help of grants from the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC)?

The District was also able to purchase seven new CNG buses with a grant provided by SCAQMD to replace seven pre-1987 buses that no longer met newer emissions standards. The fueling station can fill these seven CNG buses overnight, reducing fuel costs for these buses by approximately 20% annually.

BOUSD is pleased with the budgetary and environmental results realized from the CNG station installation.

This photo is a prime example of the culture of inclusion on the Brea Olinda High School campus. This year, the team chose Orlando Najera as their Varsity Baseball Manager. Although Orlando may have some limitations, he practices with the team every Monday and attends all home and away games. He has such a passion for baseball and absolutely shines on the field!
