Mason's Message: Your Voice Matters

The effort continues to inform and seek input regarding our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) and all of the components of this document.

BOUSD wants to ensure that this document is not just a report sitting on a shelf, but that it is the guide for what the district does. For that reason the district has worked very hard to ensure that all of its plans and documents are aligned and meaningful. In 2017, BOUSD gathered data through surveys, meetings, and in-depth conversations and below are a few of the actions and services that we implemented for the 2017-18 school year using LCAP funds:

  • The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program at Brea Olinda High School, Brea Junior High & Arovista
  • Funding for four (4) 21st Century Learning Coaches (Teachers On Special Assignment)
  • Professional Development for Teachers
  • Funding for an At-Risk Counselor split between Brea Junior High and Brea Canyon High
  • Funding for Physical Education (PE) teachers to provide additional PE time for the students, and prep time for grade level teacher planning at our elementary school sites
  • Website and mobile app to further inform parents, promote involvement and solicit community input

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want as many voices as possible to join our conversation, so this year, we are offering our parents, families, staff and community members two ways to share their thoughts.

1) Participate in our new, virtual thought sharing platform, Thoughtexchange
2) Take our online LCAP survey

Click on the links below to engage in our Thoughtexchange and/or to take our survey.

If you need assistance and want additional information about how to participate in our Thoughtexchange, please click on the link below to watch a step-by-step video of the process.

Thank you in advance for your participation!

New Interactive Whiteboard for BOHS Adult Transition & Life Skills Class

Thanks to donations from the Brea Rotary Club and Target, Adult Transition and Life Skills stuents at Brea Olinda High School now have a brand new interactive whiteboard called the Promethean ActivWall 102. The new board is an interactive whiteboard that also functions as an analog whiteboard when its technology is not being used. With the addition of the new board, the class immediately doubled their whiteboard space (from 2 to 4; the old board could NOT be used as a basic whiteboard like this one can).

With increased board space, more students can go to the whiteboard to work on interactive lessons. The new ActivWall basically is a stand alone computer that can access educational websites, as well as lessons stored in Google Classroom, Google Drive, or Dropbox. The students can write directly on websites or documents using their finger or a special pen. The board can be split into multiple panels, allowing students to work independently on separate lessons, at the same time. Multiple students can write on the board simultaneously (most interactive boards can only have one at a time). Instead of just watching a presentation, the students are now a part of it. Needless to say, this new board has made a major impact on learning and we are so thankful to the donations from our community!
Congrats to JD Williams, Parenting OC Magazine's 2018 Top 25 Teachers of Orange County

For the past 19 years, Brea Junior High Teacher JD Williams and his students have been raising money for HomeAid Orange County. JD organizes and motivates the entire 8th Grade English Department to participate in the HomeAid Orange County letter writing/Silent Auction fundraiser every year. All of the Brea Junior High 8th graders write a letter to a business asking for a donation, which is auctioned off at the annual Silent Auction which took place on January 19th. As a result of their efforts, BJH was able to donate $5.500 to HomeAid OC this year. Last year they donated over $7,000 and in total they have
donated approximately $75,000 over the past 19 years.

Due to his efforts, JD was recognized this year as one of Parenting OC's 2018 Top 25 Teachers of Orange County. This week he was recognized in front of district staff and his peers at a special awards ceremony at Bower's Museum.

Congrats again to JD!
