Mason's Message: School's (almost) Out for Summer!

This week we bring the 2017-18 school year to a successful close, and I want to once again thank all of our amazing BOUSD students, teachers, staff and administrators for their hard work this year. It is evident that our nine schools have the best of students and staff, and it brings me great pleasure to witness the dedication, passion and talent of all who represent BOUSD. This includes the numerous community members who take an active role in the educational opportunities for our students.

I cannot express enough my appreciation for the investment the Brea community is making in the futures of students that will impact the well-being of our community and communities beyond. Our business partnerships help to foster positive leadership qualities and character in students while enriching the lives of so many as the spirit of service and support in the community continues to prove itself strong.

I would like to extend my sincerest thank you to the entire community for its support of our students and our schools. I greatly anticipate the future of our schools and I look forward to leading initiatives for the benefit of all BOUSD students, staff and the community at-large.

Congratulations once again to all our graduates and thanks to everyone for another terrific year. Have a wonderful summer!

Darryl and JJ Jones, the Hatchel Family, and the Schweitzer family are among the many alumni who have established and awarded scholarships to graduating seniors this year.

Over 80 BOHS seniors were awarded a total of $5,263,219 in college and university scholarships, including the NROTC Marine Corps Scholarship of $180,000 to Aidan Yeung to attend Virginia Military Institute; National Merit Baylor Regents Gold ($172,776), Baylor Law ($106,000), and Baylor Invitation to Excellence ($2,000) scholarships awarded to Randall Wellen to attend Baylor University; and the Academic Athletic Basketball Scholarship ($200,000) awarded to Iyree Jarrett to attend Westmont College.

Each school department also recognized a student who was outstanding in that subject area this year, and the evening ended with the announcement of the BOHS Character Counts recipients, John Dempsey and Lin-Yi Recinos, who were nominated by their peers based on the six pillars of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship, and selected by a committee of school staff and community members. Laurel Elementary Magnet School's 2nd Annual Career Exploration Showcase

On Friday, June 1st, Laurel Elementary Magnet School hosted their 2nd Annual Career Exploration Showcase event. The Showcase is an opportunity for students to showcase their learning and work with their partners over the course of the year.

A large portion of the Laurel Magnet School theme allows students to learn about careers in a variety of settings. Most importantly are the local classroom business partners. These partners volunteer their time and most importantly their knowledge to students. Over the course of each year, Laurel students learn how what they are learning in school applies in the real life in real world careers!

We would like to extend a special Thanks to our 2017-2018 Career Exploration Business Partners: Brea Chamber of Commerce, Brea Fire Department, Brea Veterinary Hospital, Brea Police Department, The Village at La Floresta, Darryl & JJ Jones Realty, Brea Senior Center, Mehta Dental Group, Republic Services, New York Life Insurance, Brea Community Services, Green Tomato Grill, Service Champions Heating and Air, Curtis Orthodontics and ViewSonic.
Congrats to these BOUSD CSEA Award Recipients!

Congrats to Meredith White, Coordinator of Expanded Learning for the BOUSD Child Development Services Department on being selected as a recipient of the Jody Bell Member Student Loan Reducer Program Award. The program offers $500 to CSEA members to help reduce their overall student loan obligations.
