Dear BVP Families & Friends,

As we near the end of the first trimester, I’m so excited about the learning that’s happening within our classrooms and the meaningful ways we’re living out our new mission of preparing every scholar to achieve their goals for college and the world beyond. Earlier this month, our Junior High School hosted its third annual High School Fair designed to expose 7th and 8th grade scholars and their families to the many educational programs available to them locally. Our high school seniors are taking day trips to college campuses like Bryant University, Rhode Island College, and the University of Rhode Island, and thinking about their futures.

We’ve also made progress on advancing the goals outlined in our five-year strategic plan. Our strategic working groups kicked off last month, each focusing on a different project that is essential to advancing our organizational priorities around diversity and family communication, family recruitment and enrollment, college and career exploration, and budget planning.

Finally, The Pride Press, BVP’s e-newsletter, will be sent several times throughout the course of the year and will provide organizational updates, teacher spotlights, data highlights, and more. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.

In partnership,

AP School Honor Roll

Blackstone Valley Prep High School has secured a place on the AP School Honor Roll for the 2022-2023 school year, earning Gold distinction!

The Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success. In 2022-2023, 73% of the class of 2024 took at least one AP course and exam. Of scholars who took AP courses in 2022-2023, 66% took more than one. Many colleges grant credit for AP exams if students achieve a certain minimum score, typically ranging from 3 to 5 on a 5-point scale, reducing what it costs to attend college. Nearly 60% of the AP tests taken by BVP scholars scored a 3 or higher.

MLL RICAS Success

Last week, the Rhode Island Department of Education publicly released the final results of the 2022-2023 administration of RICAS, and our multilingual learners (MLLs) continue to be a source of pride.

Rhode Island students who have tested out of an MLL program within the last three years are outperforming the state as a whole in ELA. Specifically, BVP scholars who recently tested out of the program had the highest average student growth in the state (71%). Thank you to our Junior High School teacher and Network MLL Chair Brianna Walker for presenting BVP’s work in this area in the Boston Globe.

Mission Moment: Why BVP?

“I work at BVP because I believe in serving a community that once served you. I work at BVP because I believe each and every scholar is capable of reaching their full potential within a community that is catered to their successes, their failures, and their futures. I believe that every scholar deserves the opportunity to be prepared for a world that may not be prepared for them; to be a force and a menace to the inequitable, societal standards that they so actively fight against.”
