President's Message

As we step into 2026, I want to start by saying how grateful I am to be part of this community. The work you do every day, telling the stories of wildlife, conservation, and the people behind the science, matters deeply. A new year always brings a sense of possibility, and this one feels especially important as our roles as communicators continue to grow and evolve.

The world of marketing and outreach is changing faster than ever, and it can feel overwhelming at times. Platforms come and go, and audience expectations seem to change overnight. But at the heart of it all, our job remains the same: to connect people to nature in meaningful ways. Whether we’re crafting a press release, designing a campaign, or sharing a moment on social media, we are helping bridge the gap between complex conservation work and everyday understanding.

Social media continues to be a powerful, and sometimes challenging, tool for conservation professionals. It’s no longer just about being present; it’s about being thoughtful, authentic, and strategic. In 2026, we have an opportunity to slow down where needed, focus on quality over quantity, and use digital tools to build trust, spark curiosity, and invite people into the conservation conversation rather than just talking at them.

As we begin this new year, I hope you’ll give yourself permission to experiment, learn, and even stumble a little along the way. Lean on this community, share what’s working (and what isn’t), and remember that none of us is navigating this changing landscape alone. I’m excited for what lies ahead and confident that, together, we can continue to strengthen the voice of conservation in a noisy world.

CALL FOR SPEAKERS

ACI Conference 2026

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is getting excited for the engaging agenda we are building for the summer conference. A key piece of this agenda will be YOU! We are looking for speakers to participate in one of three ways:

  1. General session presentation: These presentations are 30-60 minutes and can be on any topic, but even better if connected to our conference theme, "The Modern Frontier." For more information, please visit the conference website: ACI Conference 2026.
  2. Lightning talk session: These presentations are up to five minutes and are quick highlights of work being done or recently completed in your organization.
  3. Breakout sessions: Small group, topic-specific discussions or workshops such as photography, magazine, web development, etc..

If you are interested, please send your name, organization, and a brief description of the topic to betsey.york@odwc.ok.gov. We look forward to hearing about the good things being done across the country!

Volunteer as a Judge!

ACI Awards

The ACI Awards Contest is made possible by volunteer judges who generously lend their expertise to review and score entries. We welcome judges from both the public and private sectors, and ACI membership is not required.

Judging will take place over four weeks, from April 15 to May 13, 2026, with all scores due by the May 13 deadline.

If you’re interested in serving as a judge, please contact Awards Co-Chairs Beth Quillian or Devin Lindley. Feel free to share this opportunity with colleagues.

Please note: Judges may not participate in categories where their agency or organization has submitted an entry. Be sure to confirm with your organization that no conflict of interest exists before volunteering.

Bridging the Divide: Non-Lead Ammunition Efforts Focus on Collaboration

Dating back centuries, to at least the 1500s, lead has been utilized in ammunition. Its inherent qualities — low melting point, malleability, and cost-effectiveness — established it as a dominant component in ammunition production to this day.

Building Organizational Capacity for AI

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2025 ACI Conference in Atlantic City, NJ, where I was fortunate to learn about one of the most talked-about topics in both the communications world and society as a whole: artificial intelligence. Speaker John Wihbey, an associate professor at Northeastern University, led us through best practices, the ethics of AI, and how conservation communicators can utilize AI while maintaining integrity.
