SOUPer Bowl of Caring Sunday
February 3rd is SOUPer Bowl of Caring Sunday! Youth will be in the Narthex following the service with soup pots ready to receive your donation of money or canned goods that will support a local hunger-relief organization. Together let's change the game and tackle hunger!
Guest Minister, Larry Larry
Sunday, February 3rd, we welcome back the Rev. Larry Lyon to the pulpit. Honorably retired as a PCUSA pastor, Larry now serves as the part-time staff associate for senior adult ministries at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.
Want Another Christian Formation Option on Sunday Morning?
The Commons is open every Sunday by 9:45 a.m. and starting February 3rd will have materials available for a self directed time during our Sunday School hour. Devotionals, good books, prayer guidance, and suggested stations will be on the first table after entering from the tunnel hall; the doors will be propped open. (The Church St. entrance is locked on Sundays.) If you currently are not attending a regularly scheduled class, this may prove a good way to connect. Grab a cup of coffee in the Hub (and a muffin) and head on down by yourself or with a friend!
Collections for Church Street Market Begin Tuesday!
It's time to get out all those items you've been saving for the Church Street Market Sale. We will begin collecting items on Tuesday, February 5th, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., in room 306 of the Will Young Building. Things needed include home and seasonal decor, linens, vintage items, artwork, children's clothing and adult jackets, "like new" shoes, purses and bags, jewelry, and household items. The next collection will be Tuesday, March 5th, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. The sale will be held on Saturday, October 6th, with proceeds going to The Commons prayer room and the Haiti mission project
Wednesday Night Fellowship
Join us on February 6th for Mission Wednesday when we’ll be packing pet food for Meals on Wheels. Please bring a large bag of dog or cat food. Latex gloves, cups, and Ziploc bags will be provided. We hope to see you there! Please make your dinner reservations by noon Monday, February 4th. Menu: bean pot, vegetable, fruit, salad, dessert.
Confirmation for 8th Grade Students
A Confirmation informational meeting for all 8th graders and their parents will be held on February 3rd, during the Sunday school hour (9:45-10:45) in the Library Conference room of the Education Building. This meeting will be a time to learn about the Confirmation journey at FPC and to ask questions. Mark your calendars and come join us! If you know you will be unable to attend, but would like your child to go through Confirmation, please contact Rachel as soon as possible.
Session Highlights from the January 8th Meeting
  • Approved a Youth Bake Sale to raise funds for missions
  • Six elders volunteered to attend an Elder Symposium on January 26
  • The church software system for managing membership and finances has to be updated. This will require a complete migration of updated information to the new system. For this purpose, and as we are required to do periodically to assure we have an accurate membership roll, elders approved a letter to reconnect with members with whom we have lost track.
  • Interim Search Committee reported that a large number of churches in the Presbytery currently have interim ministers which has greatly reduced the pool of potential interims. The committee continues to meet weekly and is reaching out to a wider geographical area.
  • Deacons have planned a Rise Against Hunger meal-packing event for February 24.
  • Deborah Mesimer will be retiring this spring. She is a tremendous asset to our church and will be greatly missed! The Personnel Committee will meet with her to plan a hiring/training process.

The Session meets monthly on the 2nd Tuesday at 7:00 pm. Minutes are open and available by request after they are approved at the following month’s Session meeting.

To connect with church officers, all Deacons and Elders and their committee assignments are listed here.
