Note from Ellen
Dear Friends,
This week we leap from the first creation narrative to one of the more challenging texts in all of scripture, when Abraham hears a call from God to sacrifice his son Isaac (Genesis 21:1-3; 22:1-14). If this text troubles you, you’re not alone. It troubles me, too, and it has troubled faithful ones for generations. I hope that you’ll find time to read it before we gather for worship and that you’ll bring your questions. On Sunday we’ll wonder and listen for God’s promise together.
Grace and peace,
Ellen

“Gleaning”
The Society of St. Andrew
The Society of St. Andrew is a wonderful organization that has helped provide food for our hungry neighbors for the last 45 years and yet not many people have heard of the organization. I hope you will read Leviticus 19: 9-10 as God instructs the Israelites to share food through gleaning. It is really beautiful scripture.
I became interested in this organization when I went with a group of ladies to Hendersonville to glean apples with the Society of St. Andrew for food pantries in the area. They are one of the most effective models for food recovery and distribution in the United States. It keeps food out of landfills and is given to those in need. So much food is grown and never harvested or some is imperfect and never sold and yet the taste and nutrition is the same .
Many of you are familiar with the Barbee Farms at the end of Pitt School and Poplar Tent Road. It is truly amazing how much food they give to the needy through this wonderful organization!
We will have as our speaker, Maria Gandy ,to tell us about their work. It is her responsibility to coordinate the harvesting, recovering and distribution in this part of North and South Carolina .She told me that they gleaned 90 thousand pounds of watermelon this summer from Barbee Farms and distributed them to a number of food pantries.
We do hope you will come to hear this very interesting program. We will also have Charlie Barbee with us. He works with those who glean at the farm. Be sure and call the church 704-788-2100 # 7 and sign up by Thursday, September 18,so there will be food for you to enjoy.

Rally Day Success
Thank you to everyone who participated in Rally Day! We had a great turnout for the event, and it was wonderful to see church members chatting with each other while enjoying a delicious breakfast and browsing the different tables.
Seeing so many groups represented shows how active our church is both within our congregation and among the broader community.
There truly is something here for everyone!

Night Shelter Week!
Our Youth kicked off the our week at the Night Shelter. Youth, 15 and under, cooked two different types of chili (meat and vegetarian) and cornbread. They enjoyed eating a portion of the meal together as the Youth dinner. Our 16 and older Youth loaded up the meal and served the clients of the Salvation Army Center of Hope. It was a meaning experience for all of the Youth. A shout out to our adult volunteers!
Thank you to the Presbyterian Women for coordinating this important ministry. It is a wonderful opportunity to serve our neighbors.
