Note from Ellen

Dear Friends,

After a short summer for most of our families, the school year begins over the next two weeks. On Sunday, at both our morning service and at our Selah service, we will ask God’s blessing on students, teachers, parents, and staff.

Our texts for Sunday are Psalm 23 and Matthew 14:13-21. Both passages speak a startling word of abundance in the midst of a culture that insists on scarcity, and a word of trust when the larger world pushes us to be fearful and suspicious.

This year’s backpack tags declare “God’s got your back!” How do we teach that to our children (and they are all “ours”)? How do we practice, learn, and embody that ourselves?

Grace and peace,

Ellen

Blessing of the Backpacks!

Join us for 11 AM worship this Sunday, August 6th and invite a friend for Blessing of the Backpacks!

Everyone who is going back to school (children, youth, adults, students, teachers, school staff), is invited to come forward during the Children’s Message, with your backpack, if you brought it.

After the blessing, we will have backpack tags for you to attach to your backpack. Additional backpack tags will be available in the narthex if you prefer not to come forward during the Children’s Message.

Don't Miss this Special Lunch Bunch Tour

Did you know that long before I-85 or US 29, there was the Great Wagon Road which ran from Philadelphia through the Piedmont to Georgia? It was the inland path many early settlers took to reach their new homes in the 1700s and 1800’s. Concord’s location along this route was one of the reasons the town was established in the 1700s.

The Lunch Bunch has a unique opportunity to have a behind-the-scenes tour of the Moss-Morris House, a farm house built along this route in 1819, and recently rescued and restored by the Niblocks of our Church family. Join us on August 16 for lunch at 12 noon at the Cabarrus Country Club followed by a special tour of the house led by William Niblock.

* The house is on a small hill with steps (4 at the side or 7 at the front). There is comfortable seating on the first floor for those who do not wish to go upstairs.

**Lunch Bunch usually meets on the 4th Wednesday but the date has been changed for August due to a scheduling conflict.

All adults are welcome! Make your reservation early by calling the Church Reservation Line 24/7 at 704-788-2100 and choosing option 7 before August 14. We will order off of the menu at the Country Club. Price is variable.

URGENT NEED FOR OUR STUDENTS IN BAYONNAIS, HAITI

Friends Empowering Haiti, (FEH), is currently extremely low in funds for unrestricted, school operations, and school food. FEH can only meet half of the requests for this month unless FEH receives substantial new donations in the next 30 days. They may be unable to fund any of the requests for August for school operations and school food. This means we may not be able to feed and educate our sponsored children next month.

Please prayerfully consider an extra donation to Friends Empowering Haiti, preferably towards unrestricted funds or for school operations, or school food. Your help for this temporary shortfall is much needed and greatly appreciated.

Donations can be made online at https://friendsempoweringhaiti.org/

or with a check made out to Friends Empowering Haiti and mailed to:

Youth Group Lends a Hand

On Thursday, several of the Youth gathered to assemble 48 sandwiches for Opportunity House – Operation Sandwich.

The group then moved to the Will Young Building to help clear out the First Kids inside playground in preparation for the annual carpet cleaning. All present were First Kids alumni and they enjoyed sharing stories from their First Kids days.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

August drop off days for the mission sale

Two more opportunities to bring us your treasures in August: 15th and 29th from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM to the ramp of the Will Young Building. We appreciate having donations be clean and in working order.

If those times are not convenient for you, items can be left on the wire racks outside of room 306 in the Will Young Building.

It’s too hot for cleaning attics now, but be thinking ahead to September when it is a little cooler and you can find those items you would like to bring in..

Have a friend, relative or neighbor who is downsizing? See what they might want to donate to our sale too!

This is our mission project that raises funds for Haiti through Friends Empowering Haiti. https://friendsempoweringhaiti.org/.  Check with Gina (704) 794-2228, Carrie (704) 467-0962, Harriett Phillips, or Sallie Dotger if you have questions.
