THE BANNER

August 13, 2025

Note from Casey

Dear friends,

This week we will wind down our summer-long series with the apostle Paul and his first letter to the church in Corinth. In no time at all, we will be reunited with Pastor Ellen as she returns from sabbatical, and we will begin to make our way through the narrative lectionary once again. But before we do, let's spend some time considering the third element of Paul's "big three." We have discussed what it means to let love lead, and last Sunday we explored how God hopes with us. But what does it mean to believe? What exactly is faith, or "the Christian faith" for that matter? In 1 Corinthians 15:12-20, Paul points the fractured Corinthian community back to a foundation that we too can look back upon to ground ourselves whenever we need: the defeat of death in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Peace,

Pastor Casey

Join us for a fun afternoon at 3:00 PM in Davis Hall, where we will package nutrient-rich meals to be sent to vulnerable communities worldwide in an effort to help fight hunger. This is not only a really fun opportunity for all ages, but is an amazing outreach event where we can help nourish the lives of others! We’d love to see lots of new faces as well as some "old hands” and encourage the whole family to come!

Backpack Drive!

Irvin Elementary School has an urgent need for new and gently used backpacks. The Deacons have placed a box in the narthex for you to drop them in by this Sunday, August 17th, so they can deliver them to the school next week.

Every backpack counts. Thank you for being a blessing!

Market for Mission's final push.....

September 16th is the final day to drop off your donations for this year's Market for Mission.

Please leave your items outside room 306 in the Will Young building on the shelves or near the door. Remember on weekdays to come after 1:00 PM so as not to interfere with preschool! If you need help to carry in, please contact a committee member and we'll meet you Tuesdays or Thursdays after preschool lets out at 1:00 PM.

Currently we have enough toys, coffee table books, and coats. Large pieces of furniture will have to wait until the day before or day of the sale. Please speak with Gina or Beth regarding larger pieces of furniture. Small stands, end tables, lamps, home decor, vintage, seasonal decorations, garden, tools, pet, puzzles & games, kitchen, and sports are all still being accepted. New this year is a 'western' themed table!

Also, let us know if you can volunteer to help. It takes a 'congregation!'

Many thanks! Gina Goff, Beth Barbee, Harriett Phillips, Kathy Pilkington, Sallie Dotger, Wendy Irvin, Carrie Myers

Banner and Social Media

With a single e-mail you can promote news in The Banner and/or the church social media accounts – Facebook and Instagram. This is a great way to let everyone know of upcoming events, provide recaps on recent events, and highlight ways FPC is serving the community.

Who – email Suzanne Russell (Suzanne.russell@firstpresconcord.org) for the Banner and René Prager (r.prager@firstpresconcord.org) for social media.

When – Banner articles are due by noon on Tuesdays for publication on Wednesdays; social media posts are made Monday through Wednesday and are often scheduled a week in advance.

What – provide a copy-ready write up that includes all the information about the event (Who, What, Where, When, and any RSVP information in a concise manner. Less is more when people are reading. Be sure to avoid “insider” abbreviations such as FH (Fellowship House) and include the church reservation line number 704-788-2100 #7 when applicable. All capital letters LOOKS LIKE SCREAMING IN PRINT, please avoid this. You may include up to 3 photos, and we will run what space allows. Be sure that you have permission for those included in the photo. Do not include personal phone numbers in your articles, but contact emails are okay.

*For social media posts, an image is required. You may find generic images on pixabay.com or use images you have from a previous year’s event.

As Pastor Ellen often says, “We are a blessedly busy place”. Our church calendar for August and September is filling in quickly, so please send your “Save the Date” and event info in as soon as possible for scheduling and sharing.
