Note from Bryan
Dear Friends,
This week we begin our study of the prophets, starting with Amos, who is believed to be the earliest of the minor prophetic writers. We know little about him other than that he lived in Tekoa, in Judah, and worked as a shepherd and a trimmer of sycamore trees. In the seventh chapter of his book, Amos is accused by Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, of being a prophet. Bethel was one of three major religious centers in Israel, but it had become a place of idol worship. Amos responds that he is neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but rather someone called by the Lord to deliver God’s message to Israel—a message that was far from popular. He warns the northern Israelites that God will bring darkness upon the land as a sign of judgment. Even though God’s message of darkness is one the Israelites will come to fear, in chapter nine, God does offer hope for the Israelites after their destruction. Through Amos, God’s message remains one of truth, justice, and faithfulness.
Blessings,
Bryan

Todd Hobbie Class
November 9, 16 and 23 – Dr. Doug Ottati Christian Faith and Politics
Before coming to Davidson, Dr. Ottati taught at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. His scholarly interests include contemporary theology and ethics, as well as the history of theology and ethics in America. He is a past president of the Society of Christian Ethics.
Dr. Ottati’s comments will treat a broad view of the subject of Christian Faith and Politics rather than simply electoral politics, or "life in the polis" before God. His discussion will range from biblical themes and early Christian figures, e.g., mystics, monastics, and St. Augustine, to medieval and Reformation views, e.g., visions of Florence as the New Jerusalem, alternative

Interfaith Friendsgiving with Mosaic of Charlotte on November 12
At 6:00 PM on Wednesday, November 12, before choir practice and our annual deacon social, we are excited to host a Friendsgiving meal in Davis Hall with our friends and neighbors at Mosaic of Charlotte, a local community of Muslims dedicated to fostering unity, service, and interfaith dialogue. Before we go our separate ways for Thanksgiving, we will gather to meet, eat, and get to know our Muslim neighbors better as we reflect on the place of gratitude and thanksgiving in our respective religious traditions. Members of Mosaic will supply turkey and mashed potatoes, but please consider cooking sides or additional entrees to be shared, and RSVP at the link below:

It’s that time of year! Antique Road Show!
The date is Tuesday, November 18 at 11:45 AM in Davis Hall. We hope you will come and invite a friend to attend and bring an item for appraisal. There is no charge for the appraisal. Appraiser Michael Hansen, is extremely knowledgeable and his only request is a donation to the Old Courthouse Theater, and the Lunch Bunch Fund takes care of that. If you do not want to bring something to be appraised, it is very interesting to hear what he says about the other items.
I bought an antique toy at Market For Missions and I plan to bring that and a handwoven quilt made by Jim’s great grandmother. I have always wanted to know more about the quilt.
Call the reservation line at 704-788-2100 #7 by 4:00 PM on Thursday, November 13. You will enjoy a delicious lunch lovingly prepared by Margaret Campbell, wonderful Christian fellowship. and a very enjoyable program.
NOTE: It is November 18, a week early this month, because of Thanksgiving. Cost is $10 for the meal.

🎄 Angel Tree—Let’s Bring Christmas Joy! 🎄
On Sundays November 16th and 23rd, our Angel Tree will be twinkling in the church narthex. Each ornament on the tree represents a local child whose parent is incarcerated, and through Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree program, we are blessed with the opportunity to help brighten their Christmas season.
Here’s how it works:
On 11/16 and 11/23, Stop by the tree and pick an ornament — that ornament is your child
Shop for 2 gifts - a needed gift and a wanted gift, and wrap them with love.
Return your wrapped gifts with the angel tag attached to each gift so we know which child it belongs to. Return your gifts to the Fellowship House by Tuesday, December 2.
It’s simple, meaningful, and such a joy to be part of. Thank you for helping us share hope and Christmas magic with families who need it most!
