Note from Ellen

Dear Friends,

As we continue our summer worship series, “Games People Play,” we turn this week to the game Operation. I played this game at friends’ houses and can still feel the thrill of extracting a funny bone without setting off the dreaded buzz that sounded when I hit the side of the opening. Part by part, piece by piece each player would do their best to remove all of the parts and win the game.

There are times when I sense we would all like to extract certain pieces of our own bodies, parts we would prefer to correct or replace. Our texts this week are 1 Corinthians 12: 12-31 and Psalm 139:1-18, 23-24. As you read them, I invite you to reflect on what it means for us (and for everyone else) to be “fearfully and wonderfully made” in God’s image.

Grace and peace,

Ellen

Bye Bye Birdie at Salisbury Piedmont Players Theatre

Teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie has been drafted, so he chooses All-American girl Kim MacAfee for a very public farewell kiss. Featuring a tuneful high-energy score, plenty of great parts for teens, and a hilarious script, Birdie continues to thrill audiences around the world, and this production features our own Jonathan Ewart!

CCM Monthly Needs

June was not quite as busy as July at our food pantries, but at the Crisis Center we still served the 5th most households in our history. So three of the top five months in our history have been in 2023! After being closed for a week at the end of June and beginning of July for inventory, the holiday, and resetting, we reopened to a record 94 households served in one day (between 2 shifts). Our CEO, Ed Hosack, explained so well in his July newsletter article about why this is happening in the midst of an apparently booming economy (https://cooperativeministry.com/news/).

Meanwhile, our inventory remains very low. It is not too late to consider sponsoring a special summer food drive for CCM! Oh, and thanks to all those who have donated egg cartons for the past two years. The egg program at the Piedmont Research Farm is winding down, so we no longer need more cartons. However, we can ALWAYS use more plastic grocery bags!

By the way, CCM has several open positions, both full-time and part-time, in the Food Program/Technology and Housing Program areas. Anyone interested can send their resumes to me (Food Program/Technology) or Amaha Sheferaw (Housing - ASheferaw@cooperativeministry.com).

A reminder if you are delivering food to the Crisis Center —The City of Concord has closed Country Club Drive for at least nine months to replace the culvert down below us. We WILL remain open throughout the road closure. However, everyone needs to come to us from the Concord Lake Road/Branchview Drive direction. It is OK for local traffic to drive past the barricades.

Currently, the pantry items we are in biggest need of are:

·    Canned Chicken

·    Other Canned Meats (Hash, Chili, Vienna Sausages, etc.)

·    Canned peas, carrots, potatoes and mixed vegetables

·    Pasta Sauce

·    Any kind of canned beans (Pinto, Chili, Kidney, etc.) except for baked beans/pork & beans

·    Peanut Butter

·    Macaroni & Cheese

·    Any Canned Fruit (Mixed, Peaches, Pears, Pineapple, etc.)

·    Cereal

·    Toilet Paper and Paper Towels

As always, we especially seek low sodium items, no-added-sugar items, and whole grain items.

Currently we have plenty of:

·    Canned Green Beans

·    Canned Corn

·    Diced Tomatoes

·    Baked Beans/Pork & Beans

·    Spaghetti

·    Rice

·    Tuna

·    Dried Beans

Thank you for the continued support from our church and community partners. Our Crisis Center at 246 Country Club Drive NE in Concord serves as the warehouse for most of the food. We will gladly accept all donations at that site from 9:30 am to 1 pm Monday through Friday. Bethel Baptist Helping Hands Food Pantry, located at 1209 1/4 Opal Street in Kannapolis, will gladly accept donations from 9 am to 1 pm on Monday and Thursday. The food pantry located at Westford UMC on Highway 49 and the Kannapolis Food Pantry at West Point Baptist Church can accept donations on Saturday morning from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. The Feeding Our Souls Food Pantry at Bethel Church in Midland, and North Kannapolis Baptist Church Food Pantry will accept donations by calling the church in advance.
