Learning to rest is a skill.
It is also an act of faith
rooted in the belief
that God is at work when you are not.
~ Dr. Esau McCaulley
Dear Friends,
I have missed you! We had a wonderful time at the beach, a true sabbath gift during which I had some time to TRY practicing what I had just preached. I hope that you have had at least a moment or two of sabbath this summer, too. As we continue our time together in Revelation and begin to turn toward all that a new season brings, my prayer is that you continue to remember to breathe and rest along the way.
Grace and peace,
Ellen

Rise Against Hunger - Making an Impact on Lives:
|
EDUCATION STARTS WITH A MEAL
Throughout his life, 13-year-old Denis has watched his parents worry about their struggles to provide basic necessities for their family. Nutritious meals were scarce, making it difficult for him to focus at school and maintain interest in his hobbies. Denis now receives nutritious Rise Against Hunger meals at partner Convoy of Hope’s feeding center. With food on the table and needs met, he’s able to focus in class and pursue his dream of becoming a systems engineer. When not focusing on math and school, Denis enjoys listening to music, time with friends and volunteering.
When: Sunday, August 21 at 3 PM
Where: Davis Hall
Who: ALL ages!
Our goal is to pack 10,000 meals! We did it in January and we can do it again! Sign up below for this fun and impactful mission activity. Parents, this is a great family activity and a wonderful way to engage your children in service to the larger world.

We have all seen the heartbreaking images from Kentucky where extreme flooding has claimed lives, homes, and businesses. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is in communication with Presbyterian leadership in the affected presbyteries to offer resources, process grants, and deploy National Response Team members when it is safe to do so. Offerings from One Great Hour of Sharing make that possible. To support this response, designate gifts to DR000191. You may:
- Call PDA at 800-872-3283
- Send a check with designation on the memo line to:

We are building teaching / care teams for Elementary Sunday School (K-5), Middle & High School Sunday School (6th-12th), Pew Prep (K/1 DURING worship), and Nursery (infant-preschool).
Curriculum / Lessons will be provided, as well as any additional training you feel that you'd like!
We are looking to build teams of 6+ people each for the Elementary Sunday School team and the Middle / High School Sunday School Team. Sunday School is 9:45-10:45 AM. Pairs will co-lead lessons and teach approximately once every 3 weeks.
Pew Prep is a 20 minute mini lesson on worship for our K/1st graders. It occurs during worship - from the end of the children's message to the Offering. We are looking for at least 4 volunteers to be regulars - serving approximately once a month, and an additional 8-12 volunteers who are willing to help out approximately once every other, or every third month.
Nursery - Our nursery is open during both Sunday School and worship, but generally we need volunteers (both adult and middle/high school teens) to help during worship. We would love to add about 4-6 additional volunteers to our current team.

First Presbyterian Church has been hosting blood drives for the American Red Cross since 2006. Since that time, 3,061 units of blood have been collected here. Each unit of blood has the potential to go to three people. That means that in the past sixteen years, as many as 9,183 lives have been saved by these blood drives. That is equivalent of saving the entire population of Moorehead City or Rockingham, NC!
Blood drives are held in Davis Hall every other month on the 2nd Monday of the month. The next two blood drives are September 12 and November 14.

This week, our Youth delivered nine meals on our summer route in Kannapolis.
Our teen volunteers were particularly touched by one client who stood smiling at her door until we drove away.
Next week is our last week for the summer. We have a spot left (and may be able to make room for a 2nd additional youth).
We will meet at 10:15 AM at the Fellowship House and youth will be dropped off at home after the route, approximately noon to 12:30 PM.

It's Back - Racial Equity Reads Returns
|
First Presbyterian’s “Racial Equity Reads” group is starting up again, and everyone is invited to participate.
The group’s first meeting will start at 3 PM Sunday, September 11, and finish by 4 PM.. Future meetings will be every other week in the the Library Conference Room.
The book we’re reading is “Dear White Peacemakers: Dismantling Racism with Grit and Grace,” by Osheta Moore of St. Paul, Minn. To prepare for the group discussion, please read the three preliminary pieces (foreword, preface and “Come to the Table”) and the first two chapters of Part 1. That’s a total of about 50 pages.
Please consider ordering the book from Shelves, a Black-owned book merchant in Charlotte ( orders@shelvesbookstore.com). It is also available to order from Amazon.com.
Please email Scott Verner, sverner@yahoo.com, if you plan to participate, and if you have questions.
