Curates Corner

I was invited by the Aina Haina Public library to come and bless the library on its grand opening day this past Tuesday since it has been closed. It has taken time for the repairs and renovations from the floods last year. The day has finally come for this important place to be used once again.

The Aina Haina Public Library is a gathering place in our community. It has many programs for people of all ages, which are held throughout the year. It has an active Friends group that holds several very popular book sales each year.   Our community has missed the library and that was certainly evident on opening day by all the smiling faces. What a privilege it was to be part of that day and represent Holy Nativity Church.

Fr. Chris
With Easter just around the corner, NEW plastic Easter eggs, medium and large size, WRAPPED candy to fill the Easter eggs, and flower donations are welcomed.  Candy & egg  donations may be brought to the parish office, while flower donations can be organized with Sandra Braham and the Altar Guild. Mahalo!

Our Outreach Committee, led by Wyn Aubrey-Child, has identified the Samaritan Counseling Center of Hawaii as a program to support in 2019. The Samaritan Counseling Center is celebrating its Thirtieth Anniversary this year. It provides counseling for individuals and families as well as acting as a resource for clergy and congregations of many religious traditions. The counselors are sensitive to cultural context and client's belief systems. No person or family is denied services because of their inability to pay. Far too often, low-income persons who need help cannot obtain it. To address this problem the Center has established a Client Assistance Fund. Our Holy Nativity gift will be earmarked for this Fund.
With joy and thanksgiving, the Outreach Committee brings the Samaritan Counseling Center to your attention. The Vestry has approved the goal of making a gift of $3000 earmarked for the Client Assistance Fund. Some of this amount will come from the Outreach section of our 2019 Operating Budget. Also, the "plate offering" for Easter Sunday will go to Samaritan Counseling. Finally, individuals may contribute to this important ministry by writing a check to the Church of the Holy Nativity and noting Samaritan Counseling on the Memo line. These individual gifts may be put in the offering plate on any Sunday or brought to the parish office. Mahalo!

 Rectory Update

Why is so there so much activity in and around our Rectory? Well, last year there were roofing issues and our insurance company determined that the roof should be replaced. Eva Eglinton, Junior Warden, and Joe Kindrich, Facilities Committee, did the paperwork to get approval from the Diocese because this was to be a major undertaking. The work began when Fr. Luis vacated the space. As it went along, additional needs for gutters and the like were discovered and added to the scope. We have now received the insurance company's check which pays for all the work except for our $1000 deductible.
But there's more: Justin Donahue, an arborist, has donated his time and talent (as did his son Daniel) to perform the necessary trimming of some of the yard's trees. Rosemary Domecki has pitched in, too. She has provided doors, new doorknobs, paint supplies, labor and other hardware as well as a new kitchen floor. Other willing volunteers have gotten two of the rooms painted, but the rest of the painting will need to be contracted out. Rosemary has made an assessment of the yard and has identified some shrub-trimming and planting that are needed also. This remaining work will be completed this month. The repairs and renovation work have exceeded our original budget, but the Vestry has voted the additional funding and we expect to be able to rent our refreshed Rectory for the next several months. Many thanks, also, to Austin Nakoa, Senior Warden and chair of the Facilities Committee, who made sure all the pieces of the project fit together.

A big Mahalo from the Outreach Committee to all those generous people who answered the call to give a financial gift to The Samaritan Counseling Centre last Sunday.  Special thanks to Bob and Jean Steele who penned the Good Samaritan skit to help us all celebrate the 30 year anniversary of this ministry, by giving to the Client Assistant Fund at the Center.  This fund helps people receive services if they cannot afford to pay for them.  We are having a special collection on Easter Sunday in order to reach our goal of $3,000.  We have already raised half of that goal.  If you feel you would like to contribute to this cause, please write your check to Holy Nativity, and on the memo line write "Samaritan Counseling"

If anyone has further questions on this outreach project, please contact me.

Outreach Co-ordinator for the Vestry.
