I saw it happen once. I am a former Catholic, once a third-generation member of St. Anthony’s in Wailuku, Maui.
At that time, we parishioners were a bit frustrated. We kept being assigned priests from Belgium. Often, their accents were heavy and difficult to parse. And they understood little of local culture and island ways.
When we heard we were getting our first local Japanese-American priest, we were heartened. He was a very nice and polite man but hardly charismatic and his preaching was . . . not to be uncharitable, but it was far from riveting.
One Easter Sunday, however, this local-boy priest gave a sermon that changed my view of him.
He appeared a different person even as he stepped to the lectern. His face was radiant, his manner upbeat, his words ringing. He told how much he loved Easter — everything about it, the end of pain for the human Jesus, the promise that it offered of life everlasting, of course.
But he also told us he loved the frivolous trappings. For the first time any of us could recall, he shared a personal story. He talked of his mother, a convert dedicated to teaching Christian ways to her children, and also American ways. He recalled how she would drive out to a farm to buy fresh eggs, dye them with natural dyes made from spices and various plants, and use her own cutouts to create lacy patterns on the eggs.
That day, I came to appreciate Easter in a new way. It seemed the whole world smiled: beautiful weather, the priest with his face full of faith, hope, and love. Mom and I talked about it all day and the parish seemed more unified afterward, she reported.
From that day, I have read much on the Easter miracle. And I, too, have loved this Christian high holiday ever since.
