REV. LIBBY & MARK BERMAN CELEBRATE 30 YEARS TOGETHER
Rev. Libby and Mark were completely surprised by the celebration orchestrated by members of the congregation on this past Sunday, August 15. At the end of the service, an invitation was made to the congregation to move to one side of the nave; suddenly, the old "Flintstones" video rendering of the song, "Happy Anniversary" rang out! Rev. Libby and Mark received a card and poster, as well as wrapped champagne and a cake. The celebration concluded with the ringing of instruments and a count-down to 30 years.
"We were both so surprised and delighted," said Rev. Libby. "We expected to have a quiet celebration of our anniversary this year, together with our two daughters, Samantha and Emily, who are both in town this month. We feel so appreciated and loved by everyone in the Holy Nativity community. Thank you for celebrating with us!"
REFLECTION ON
LIFE
DURING COVID
(Read from the top to the bottom; then read it again, from the bottom to the top--and take courage!)
The 2 sides of 2020:
2020 didn’t bring me anything.
You never hear me say
That we can do more together than alone.
Because when I look around I discover
Tension and unrest around me.
Every week I feel less connection with people I like.
I felt that I alienated myself from the world.
Above, all, don’t tell me,
“There’s something nice about every day.”
Because no matter how you turn and twist it
I’ve stood still this year.
You will never hear me say,
“2020 brought many rays of hope.”
Now, remember to read it again, from the bottom to the top! (Thank you to Heidrun and Sheil for sharing this poem with us; translated from the German by Chandi Hinrichs.)
PARTNERS IN MINISTRY:
HOLY NATIVITY & CALVARY LUTHERAN
Rev. Libby met with the Rev. Dr. Moses Barrios, the new Senior Pastor at Calvary by the Sea Church, this past week to talk about ways in which our two congregations, which are very close to each other both physically and theologically, might work together in coming days. Holy Nativity has supported Calvary's Angel Network Food Ministries during COVID-19, as they have been providing for so many more families during the pandemic. We look forward to continuing in that partnership--and to adding to it with other joint efforts, when and as we can.
Pastor Moses, his wife, Brenda, and their three children arrived at Calvary from Los Angeles last spring. We congratulate the congregation and Pastor Moses on this new call and we offer prayers for Calvary's ministry and for our future work together!
COVID SURGE PRECAUTIONS
During this current COVID surge we need to make some changes to worship that we hope will be temporary, but are very important. Everyone will be masked during worship services. Those receiving the Sacrament will please return to your seats before consuming it. We will limit singing and suspend coffee hour. Be assured that we will return to more relaxed practices just as soon as we are safely able to do so.
Mahalo for your kokua and prayers!
