Keeping Advent
The season of Advent may be the most counter-cultural time in the Church year. While the rest of the community is busy with Christmas shopping, decorations, parties, and concerts, we in the Church have a season to reflect and prepare to celebrate the Coming of Christ, the birth of Jesus, the Incarnation of the Word of God as a human baby.
Willis and I keep Advent in our home. We have an Advent wreath. We lit one candle the first Sunday of Advent and two last Sunday, and so on through the season until we light them all with the Christ candle on Christmas day.
Christmas decorations go up after the fourth Sunday of Advent. With Christmas being on a Sunday this year we get a whole week to get ready!
As I suggested in my sermon last Sunday, there is value in taking quiet time during this busy season to reflect on how we are doing with the issues that interfere with our capactity to grow in love and service and to turn or repent of those things. It is also a great time to reflect on the past year - lessons learned, things we might have done differently, how we have grown in love.
Being this our of sync with the rest of the world may be uncomfortable, but taking time for reflection during Advent can help us be less stressed and more ready to begin the new year free of this year's burdens and ready to share the incarnation of Christ with a troubled world.
Advent and Christmas blessings to you all.
Kahu Alison
